Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Team Fortress 2 causes system freeze after 10-20 minutes with the RadeonSI/AMDGPU driver.
This bug is all over the place, and was posted months ago on GitHub with no developer responses yet. The new AMD driver runs the game beautifully on the R9 380 (Asus, 4 GB Video RAM) ...At least until the entire computer gets held up at ring 0. That's only the brunt of the problem, though, as Fury X and 390 users have reported identical kernel hang-ups. No other titles running on Source have had a single crash or freeze after playing through them normally, even for hours at a time. But TF2 has been causing issues since December 18, 2015's patch[github.com]. From what I've personally played, all of the Source titles perform amazingly, better than when I used fglrx.
This issue was already on the bug tracker for Xorg a few times, and it doesn't actually seem to be a problem on their part.
If anyone who was contracted to work on ToGL or Source for Linux is still kicking around at Valve, would you mind taking a peek at this bizarre and critical bug? I know we're an invisible minority compared to the more lucrative Windows crowd, but I think many players would be delighted to play TF2 uninterrupted, using the new and improved driver.

Nobody at Valve ever visits these forums. Or GitHub. Or reads their email. You might as well be shouting at a brick wall.

I've seen volunteers here rarely. The tough part would actually be finding anyone at Valve who worked on ToGL or the Linux compatibility, since I think that was all done by contractors.

They created that Github page and actually actively develop Steam for Linux through there.

They patch the Steam client regularly on the Beta branch, but the TF2 team caring about cross-platform is a laugh.

I guess you're right: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/4409

In the mean time, a GTX 970 works, but is not a real solution, especially for people with idealistic problems about proprietary drivers. For them, I'd say we've got to use Intel GPUs with framerate configs in the mean time.

Yeah, that really isn't a viable solution, specially for me who the only proprietary software allowed is Steam (and the GPU Firmware, but that runs on the device and not on the host OS/CPU).

But that's only one game, so I'm not really bothered by it. I could do some bisecting to see what's the problem with the drivers, but considering each successful bisect takes around 13 compiles/reboots and each of these takes ~30 min for me, and I have around 10 different Kernels to test....... I *really* don't have the time to do that :P

It wouldn't be nearly as stupid if running the game in Wine didn't somehow produce the same crash.

Some people reported the problem on Wine too. Besides, I don't like the idea of Wine, and I haven't used in more than 4 years.

And using it isn't a solution for the problem itself :/

I like the idea of it a lot if it's not being used to run the hot mess that is Steam. It's fantastic for running proprietary stuff you're phasing out without tainting your installed OS. Also excels at running ancient software that would give newer versions of Windows trouble.

Pity Intel doesn't make dedicated graphics cards with real computing power. Maybe we should pester them into getting into that bidness.

Maybe they realized that integrated GPU's have somewhat of a bigger future than what they have now?

I have the same problem with my r7 360, the system freezes around the time span you mentioned. None of the source games are running well with my card (on open source drivers), my intel igpu actually beats the r7 360 in day of defeat.

FfFfFf, do you still face this problem today?
