Low framerate in games [Ubuntu]
In every game I get a max of ~37 fps and the framerate is really choppy, whether it's Bioshock Infinite on max, or Half Life 2 on minimum settings. I'm using the fglrx-updates driver with a R9 290 and an i7 920 (kinda old, but still) on Ubuntu 15.04. Is there anything I can do? Do AMD's drivers just suck balls?

This fixed the problem for me.

sudo apt-get update
apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-dev

And then the old turn it off and on again combo

No using heavy DEs helps a lot. Try openbox + LXDE.

I should have said, I'm using XFCE. Actually, It turned out that having Firefox open in the background was causing the framerate drop, though I'm not sure why

Because browsers use an insane amount of system resources.
