Steam for Linux

Any way to have detailed error log from steam?
I have a ubuntu 16.04 with GeForge GT 730 GPU.
Everything worked fine (excepts for the known texture issue after sleep/wakeup) until the disk started dying and I had to replace it and did a clean install.
Most games worked right out of the box (to my surprise, the first time I had to work on it) but several games simply don't start.
I tried launching steam from command line to get error messages, but there aren't any.
So I messed with binary drivers, and now I'm using nvidia 384.69 (or at list all clues point to that, nvidia-settings works fine).
I don't want to reinstall from skretch.
What I think is really strange is not being able to get any error message: the games simply go through 0.2~0.5'' of "starting up", then back to nothing.
Any hint?
Thanks.

in terminal run the game itsself and see if that gets you what you need for the log.
example

steam steam://rungameid/371010 see if their are any startup errors their.

Insert the correct number for whatever the game is.

edit is the game tropical 5 your having issues with by anychance? I recall I had to do something to get that one working right. invited you on my friends list.
