Achievements make some games freeze
I think there is an issue with the Intel GM45 Express graphics card and the steam overlay. I am just putting this here to see if anyone else is having an issue, but i also posted it on github.
For the games "Cook, Serve, Delicious" and "Thimbleweed Park" and "The Count Lucanor" and "The Spatials" and "Guacamelee!" and "River City Ransom" and "Ubermosh: Wraith" and "Nightmares from the Deep 2", whenever there is an achievement or trading card popup, the game freezes. It needs to be killed by commandline. Dozens of other games on my system do not show this problem, though.

That could point to a problem within the games themselves. Are teh games native, or are they wrapped in something like Wine or a flash-compat layer?

They are all native, unless there is something in the engine that I cannot see.
Another interesting point, perhaps a bug, but the steam overlay are turned off. Aren't the achievements and trading card drops part of the steam overlay?

This problem happens even when Steam is in Offline Mode and the computer is disconnected from network..

I noticed that the computer is not totally frozen. For some strange reason, the virtual consoles do not work (CTRL-ALT-1,2,3,4,5) but the Unity menu does work. If I press the WinKey, I can get the Unity menu up, and from there I can type a restart command.

Unfortunately, this problem is hard to reproduce, because even though the game stops, the steam server still recognizes the achievement as completed. In order to cause the game to freeze again, I would have to find a new achievement to complete.

Wrote to Vavle Support, and received response that the problem must be my hardware, because they cannot reproduce it.

Noticing a problem with a lot of Unity3D games that should work on these specifications.
Desktop is 1366 x 768 @ 60 Hz Unable to find a supported OpenGL core profile Failed to create valid graphics context: please ensure you meet the minimum requirements E.g. OpenGL core profile 3.2 or later for OpenGL Core renderer Vulkan detection: 0 No supported renderers found, exiting
Update: just found a web reference saying that Unity3D dropped support for OpenGL 2.x

Well, I saw a steam client update that had in the notes a reference to games freezing from pop-ups. I was hopeful this would fix the problem, but no, I was playing River City Ransom Underground, when an achievement caused the game to freeze. That game is not using a unity engine.

An interesting observation: when games are in windowed mode, the popup will not cause a freeze. This problem may be related to fullscreen only.

Found a little fix for this issue: There are a few seconds while the achievement pop-up happens. During that time, a nimble gamer can Alt-Tab to the Steam Client, then wait until the pop-up disappears. Afterward, the game will continue running without issue, by Alt-Tab back into the application.

There is something about the "fade out" of the pop-up that causes the problem. Another fix is clicking the pop-up to open the Friends list (weird function...) because it will close the popup without a "fade out"

Sometimes, however, the game will freeze just as the achievement is appearing, when it slowly rises in the bottom-right corner. Then, even this fix is not useful.

By the by, I gaveaway that computer so this is no longer an issue. I will delete the tread, after a few months, unless someone else says they have the same problem.
