Many times it has happened to me that I join a (competitive) game only to notice my ping is 300. It would solve a lot of headaches for me and team-mates if Steam reminds me of my high ping when I try to start an online game. Just like a friendly reminder so I can change my plans or solve the cause (e.g forcing little brother to shut down uTorrent :p).
