Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Offical Epic support before legion go s launch
Right now if the legion go s launches critics will immediately support windows regarding non-steam games. While you can install third-party launchers like epic, gog, and itch vis desktop mode, critics of the legion go s will instantly point to how much easier this process is on windows. I recommend working with Epic and GOG to get offical support for their games on steamos. I know Epic might be a pain to work with but im sure gog would be onboard in a hertbeat.

Literally nobody cares, everyone uses Steam or knows how to install GOG themselves on linux, SteamOS edition is $250 cheaper than Windows edition.
Next one.

I know most folk will know how to just look up a youtube tutorial and follow it pretty easy, I am talking about the critics comparing the steam and windows legion go s who will give windows the win for easy non-steam games.

Nobody cares what "game journalists" think especially when its not them paying $250 extra for it. In fact if you follow any of the handheld PC discussions you'd know people seem like they'd be willing to pay the $250 extra to get working sleep/resume, no windows ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on a tiny touch screen, etc
I mean I wish GOG made a native Linux client as a big GOG user but it is what it is, most people don't care, its a Steam console and thats perfectly fine, its extremely easy to install anything, non issue.

You keep bringing up irrelevant things like the price point and other things for users to like about the steam version which I 100% agree with, I am just thinking up of what people will dislike about this version vs windows one. Also, it won't just be "game journalists" breaking down the points, it will be nearly every pc youtuber, and also people will indeed be looking at game journalist articles to help them choose what to buy. I'm just saying valve should be trying their best to compete with what people might argue windows does better.

Valve seems to just succeed more every time they do nothing, where was this argument when the Steam Deck launched? Nobody cares, learn how to add a non-Steam game or pay the $250 stupidity tax, judging by how much more successful Steam Deck is than all of its clones (thats all they are cheap imitations to cash in on the trend) absolutely everyone knows how to install whatever they want or they don't to begin with. People who don't know how to do it probably wouldn't expect to play Playstation games on a Switch either so they wont really be affected by "not being able" to play non-Steam games on a Steam console, they probably don't even know there is another way to get PC games than Steam. Non-issue.
Valve absolutely should not throw epic a bone so they can postpone their shutdown date by two more years, in fact it'd piss off many Steam users if there was any kind of integration, consult reviews of EOS forced games on Steam for more info. If you want epic go to epic, this is Steam and nobody cares about epic.

Actually, as surprising as it may seem, there are many people that DO like epic. I hate them to death, but I've seen many people who like it. Also, it doesn't have to be forced, it can be a downloadable plugin from game mode. Also, going to non-steam shortcuts for the first time on steam deck gives a prompt to install google chrome along text saying something along the lines of "you can add your own games here in desktop mode, but in the future we plan to make it easier to install non-steam games" implying valve might already be doing this. Also, valve themselves markets a "handheld" pc, very rarely if ever do they use the term "console".

The difference is that Steam Deck doesn't have a Windows version.

@OP: Yes, that would be cool. I'm not sure Valve is reading here though. And it might not even be in their interest. Having someone else making hardware (not much money to make here) that defaults to selling (only) your software (here's the money) seems like a pretty good deal already...

windows on handheld > less stable, less hw ressources for the game itself, way more power usage so battery is way faster empty... full of tracking etc... btw epic + ms some of the damn big destructiv ones.... which tell you every day "♥♥♥♥ you you moron... you so stupid and still on my leash... damn we ♥♥♥♥ you and you still say thanks and protect us."

Legion Go S reviews are out, SteamOS version is getting universal praise for being cheaper, having functional suspend, battery lasting longer, games performing better, ease of use.
People pretend that non-Steam platforms matter but they really don't, nobody is going to pay more for an inferior device just because they wouldn't follow an online guide or just pay up the 5$ on sale to rebuy a game on Steam they got for free on the weeny ripoff launcher or whatever. You can pretend otherwise but it doesn't change the truth, EA and Ubisoft know whats up, they make money hand over fist reselling Steam copies to people who already had those games for ages elsewhere because everyone wants everything on Steam and are willing to pay for it again. Other than GOG no other PC platforms are relevant.
There is a reason Steam is rumored to be even coming to the next Xbox, you know its bad when even Microsoft on their own lockdown box are giving up, Steam is the only popular digital distributor that has universally good reputation, even console players hate their digital stores which is why they keep fighting to keep their discs.
Maybe if other stores dont wanna be left behind they can support new platforms, sticking by Windows right now is soon gonna be like sticking to MS-DOS going into the 2000s.
I just hope Valve doesn't ♥♥♥♥ something up with SteamOS or just decide that after they conquered handhelds the fight is done and just give up, next logical step is certified SteamOS gaming laptops, once people see the same advantages as on handhelds it'll grow even more, shame its gonna take a long time but thats the smart move, playing the long game. Once people start buying SteamOS laptops with time even companies like Riot will cuck to Valve and they'll print even more money.

why people prefer steam is simply because valve invests money in the backbone and server infrastructure. Since the launchers are not built in such a way that only shareholders are happy with them...
The forums with the community... all the junk content in the workshops that still requires storage capacity etc.
steam is profit-oriented but still offers something to the user. Like pushing linux...., cooperating with OSS maintainers of several projects linux vulkan mesa wine etc.
ahja you bought win version can automatically use linux version if natively available and of course vice versa.
the funny thing is that valve is always accused of having a monopoly... uplay origin epic... it would have ALL the potential to prevail but you don't want to invest anything but maximum profit. result their users come to steam, for example, because there is a forum etc.
