Weird Performance / Crashes on SSCR vs SSC and SSHD
So I haven't touched SSCR in about four years since my last playthrough, but I do not recall this many technical problems as far as crashing and overall performance issues. While my hardware on my old desktop and my current laptop aren't powerhouses, I could have easily played this game with decent 1080p quality whereas here the game (and Classic) seems to only handle 640 x 400 without adjusting the options further. (Also, fire seems to be a bigger issue here than SSC.)

There are two aspects of SSCR that I think may be the culprit: Win 10 and the SSC infrastructure. My old desktop was Windows 7, which was also a 32-bit operating system; my laptop uses Win 10 with 64-bit architecture. On my laptop, launching the game in full screen was a royal pain until I enabled the compatibility options to revert it back to Win 7. This aspect also was true when I had attempted to play SSC with the same settings, and my performance was equally a problem.

This all leads me to believe it's the SSC foundation itself that is causing most of the technical problems. Although I will point out that SSCR crashed way more times than the original versions, and I cannot explain why. Immediately after playing SSC and SSCR, I booted up the HD version to play the exact same level, and my performance problems vanished on 720p. I had to tone down some options--which the SSCR and the SSC releases constantly remove my settings--but the performance difference was night and day. This is also how I play Fusion on this computer.

I'm hoping there is something more I can do to get a better experience as I do want to enjoy this version of SS as much as the HD counterparts, especially with the higher player-count and the new campaign. This is a weird case where the older versions of games run far worse than the newer ones. These are all conclusions based on various tests of my own, so I'm curious if other people experienced similar problems.

So I tweaked the settings some more and lowered everything on the advanced rendering options to the lowest settings now. For the main campaign, the levels run smoothly at 720p like I can do on the HD version, so I am happy enough with that improvement. However, some levels in the Blight Cove campaign are absolutely awful on performance like that giant cave.

At least this is an improvement over what I would get in Classic.
