[ze pausing, THE PAUSE]
when i shift-tab on this game, it starts playing normally, but when i get in the game, it pauses, and there is no pause key bind in the control settings

There should be a Pause / Break key on your keyboard.
To get rid of pausing - open the console (press F1 or ~ key) and type /sam_bPauseOnMinimize = 0

For me, it seems to be the 'P' key.
