That said, you aware that you can upgrade your vehicles? Any complaints on 'underpowered' vehicles could be remedied through that. There's also the tuning system that lets you better tune the vehicle for the track or event. Not to mention there's the assists you can make use of to help manage things a tad better.
For me, I go with this: Full (Stability), Half (Traction), Half (ABS), and Automatic Gear Shifting.
For general tuning, I go with: 3 (Gear Ratio), 4 (Differential), and 2 (Brake Balance).
For Suspension, that has to be changed depending on the track's composition. I got with 1 on 80% to 100% gravel, 2 for 75% gravel and 25% tarmac, 3 for 50/50 gravel and tarmac, 2 for 25% gravel and 75% tarmac, and 1 for 100% tarmac.
Your experience does not jibe with mine at all. There are big complicated tracks, there are tracks of everything imaginable, realistic to insane. The driving is normal fare, not weird. There's no sliding forever or underpowered problem that I see (You can choose poor parts if you wish, but why? The parts you give yourself for power and protection, both, are cheap in terms of in-game credits.)
The AI try like hell to wreck you, although you can tame them a bit with a mod. The only rag dolling of drivers is on 3 old mod cars. There is no driver ragdolling on any Bugbear car in Wreckfest.
The game makes sure you are struggling every race? How so!?
The tournament is boring; I hear you there. It's grinding to get overpriced cars and paint jobs.
There are demolition derbies and on expert the AI are super sneaky, mean, and have mad skills, and you are in for a big hairy wrecktreat. And, yes, there are demolition danger courses and they are a car-killing good time. This is Wreckfest!
What makes this a GENERIC racing game? Huh??
I really like Trail Out too, but that is an homage to Flatout. Wreckfest really is not. It's fun as all get-out but more realistic. It is a bonafide racing game. The devs imagination is on a Flatout level, but this is a very aggressive racing game to challenge your driving skills realistically. It's a mad max world, more down to earth than Flatout, or Trail Out, or Burnout Paradise.
In singleplayer, you can create so many scenarios of your custom wishes about all sorts of variables that Wreckfest gives you that [you] can eat up all your free time trying out all the fun possibilities.
There are a ton of modded cars and tracks that look great and are free.
Also the grain harvesters will toss you if you fall over. But why is that a bad thing for a man who prefers Trail Out and Split Second type world immersion? Trail Out THROWS the driver long-distance at a bullseye target. In Wreckfest the Flatout holdovers are just, well, you fell off...maybe were run over.
But in the vast vast majority of all Wreckfest vehicles, and that includes the modded ones of which there are many, only three retain old driver eject because those are resurrected beta stuff modders contribute and Bugbear is lenient about it.
You can use an alternate VW Bug and eject a guy w/o a helmet and in street clothes *blue jeans and a shirt.* It depends on how tough the vehicle is as to when those three cars will give up the driver. The other car is dinky too (European One?) that ejects drivers. Bugbear replaced that one, and no driver ejection can occur. Usually they go to the pavement or dirt in last man standing demolition derbies once the car is super-trashed. The Rammer Custom holds your own guy (you) in, but the AI are eventually killed by a ragdolling to death. The Rammer Custom was replaced too...no ragdolling happens, ever.
At first this game was great but after a while it got boring. Maybe i did select the wrong upgrade for the wrong car, maybe I didnt tune it perfectly, i just wanted to race, have some argy bargy. This game has that but, it is missing something in my mind.
WE are at a stage in racing game technology that destruction and evolution could be and would be great.
To all the avid FLATOUT fans, enjoy the nostalgia while it lasts.
AI that rams you to it's own detriment to winning. Cars 30 points below yours, unable to catch them no matter how well you drive. Haha isn't it funny station wagons are beating your muscle car because they don't obey the same physics rules you do?
Isn't it funny that the AI work as a team to screw up the player solely for the purposes of inducing frustration, making the 'restart' button the single most pressed one in the game?
It's so sad when the devs clearly don't want their players to have fun in career mode. The only way to win is to slam all the cars that will out-speed yours no matter what tuning or mods you have. You will know if you can win a race within 10 seconds. Oh isn't it funny those magic superspeed station wagons with better traction across a much longer vehicle start in the 1 and 2 positions? Lol isn't it funny to frustrate the players instead of providing any sort of challenge?
Oh and the funny thing of if any car manages to get ahead even if they normally drive like crap, they will magically be pro and never make even slight mistakes at that point. And be faster than you, consistently, while 50-100 pts below your vehicle
And any answer to these very legit criticisms and what seems like clear dev intent is just explanations on how to exploit the AI to win as they suicidally (for winning the race) slam into you and push you etc. With cars that don't respect the same physics as the player.
It's incredible, I have played Dark Souls and all sorts of very potentially frustrating games. And nothing like Wreckfest, because you can FEEL the derision of the devs towards the players in the game, it sucks
Magically regaining traction while in a slide/spin to get ahead of you without even losing speed, your own traction wildly inconsistent as well as steering. It really sucks to be hated, and the devs hate me for playing their game.
Is the AI perfect? No. Are they beatable? Yes.
The main thing with the AI is that there's a few layers to them. The AI difficulty you set them to, the track itself, and the class of the vehicle. The AI often struggle on more technical circuits but are near terrors on simpler ones. Just play Dirt Devil Stadium to see what I mean, they struggle hard on that track compared to something like a more flat oval track. They also handle C to B class vehicles better than A class in my personal experience.
The AI difficulty really only impacts whether or not they have rubberbanding and how strong it is. Obviously, Novice has none outside of them slowing down to allow the player to catch up while with Expert they won't slow down to let you catch up. If you're struggling hard, nothing wrong with reducing the difficulty... and if you're struggling on Novice then that's a genuine skill issue at that point where you need to get a better handle on the vehicles you're using.
That said, their aggression is also tied to player's proximity to them. If you're near them then they will have a strong likelihood on trying to ram into you. If you want to fight back, you have to pick and choose when and where to do so. Spinning them on turns, even the most subtle ones, is easier than trying to do the same on a straight because they fight it like they have maxed out stability control. On straights, you're better off trying to either break away from them or shoving them into a wall or any hazards like poles or rocks. Of course, your mileage will vary depending on your vehicle's weight compared the AI's and vehicle armor does play a role in that.
