I've raced on all of the game's tracks (at least, all of the ones featured in the Career Mode and some seen in the Tournament Mode) and never once encountered this.
For example, it happened to me the other day on the Hellride track. At the fork, I aimed my car to go up the right side, but got hit by a bot and spun around. When my car quit spinning from the hit, I was facing left and thus decided to go up that way instead. The game immediately threw up a "Press 'T' to reset" message and stopped counting my progress. When I reset, the game put me back facing up the right side, but by then I had dropped from 2nd place down to 8th place.
I've also had it happen when I've cut a corner a little short. Literally half the car is off the track and half the car is still on the track. It's very annoying when it happens, but it happens rarely, so I wouldn't call it a MAJOR bug. And due to the mechanics of the game, I'm not sure it's something that CAN be fixed.
With Hellride, it legitimately has like... three or four respawn points. With tracks like that, there is bound to be issues with checkpoints... sadly.
