Mouse & Keyboard controls
My wrist gets tired VERY quickly while playing this game. It feels very touchscreen focused, but as I game on my living room TV I'd like the controls to be more mouse/keyboard friendly. I find it is most painful when I have to hold down the mouse button and collect belief, or destroy a lot of rocks. I'd sugguest making it work more like a magnet so belief will be drawn to where you're clicking. Not from the whole map, but certainly a larger area than a single abode.

Do you guys test on touch, or with m/k? PLEASE play with m/k combo to see what I mean.

When scrolling through the timeline of cards, it would be awesome if we could use the mouse wheel to scroll.

I know for a fact that Godus is optimized for a touch-screen.

Several players who are in possession of an external touch/tablet device for their computer have connected it and confirmed that the game is much more responsive with such a device.

22cans should try to play to the strengths of both platforms. As opposed to assuming that the M/KB combination can adequately perform under the touch-optimized code.

Indeed. I tried it with my intuos4 & my cintiq & the experience was vastly improved. It is a FAR from optimum play experience though, as I don't want to sit 3 feet from my TV/computer setup to play it. I even tried in-home streaming to use a touch device. These are all non-optimal. There's definitely no reason M/KB controls should be this ineffective.

Unless you actually don't care about a desktop and are going mobile-first in face of all claims to the contrary.

Just as desktop games pushed onto a mobile environment are not typically idea, going touch-first on a desktop is also sub-optimal, as Microsoft have learned to their cost.

There have been many suggestions about the controls.

This one is mine[22cans.zendesk.com] - primarily aimed at sculpting. Mana collection and rock/tree removal have improved a little since but sculpting works exactly as horrible as it did in the very first alpha release.

Telling me that my PC game works very well with another type of computer that I do not own is no help. =)

There are some great ides there, Gazz. I liked it a lot! Something I think would be a huge help would be holding a KB button to sculpt, collect belief, or clear trees/rocks instead of the mouse button. I think that would kill 80% of the wrist strain right there.

Instead of a 'hold left mouse button down, and drag" it would be 'hold down 'F' key, and push/pull mouse' I can move my mouse around all day, but when I have to hold the button down while doing it, it becomes painful very quickly. I hope they can implement some of this, as it would make the game much more playable

If anything like continuous sculpting shows up, we have options.

For instance:
  • If in sculpting mode, hold LMB for 1000ms while not moving the mouse.
  • This locks you into sculpting mode, holding down LMB for you until you click again.
You wouldn't have to hold a mouse button or key.

That would be refinement to be added after a working system was implemented.

But no such thing will happen with the current (yuck) system of chipping away at a mountain like a sparrow with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
There's nothing to refine about a turd.

This feedback was provided over a year ago. 22cans did not care. In fact they swore the kickstarter backers were overreacting and swore it was a PC game and not being dumbed down for the mobile.
Believe it or not the current terrible touch screen controls are actually an improvement, please remember "awful and horrible fruitpad UI emulation using mouse and keyboard" is an improvement to "the designer has never touched any tech other than an iphone"

But dewd. Iphones rawk and every one uses them! they must be awesome design.

one thing though. OP if your hands/wrist etc are getting tired/sore from holding down a button you might want to get that checked. on a side note. yes. I agree. holding down a mouse button repeatedly because you can only spoon out a mountain is annoying and it'd be nice to have a toggle switch rather than a pressure switch.

With a simple Autohotkey script I can change my mouse button to an on/off button if I want to. =)

Yeah, but Gazz, you shouldn't have to, and you weren't originally intended to: Godus update video #3 (http://godus.boards.net/thread/121/04-28-2012-designing-godus)

Peter: But the main focus at the moment is to get the mouse right. That is our main focus, it’s our obsession. . . . So PC players, don’t worry about it. Mobile and tablet players, you know, absolutely it’s going to be a delightful interface, but definitely the PC too.

Jack: So we’re not thinking of it as a way of dumbing down for casual market, we’re thinking about basically an alternate input device. We want to be able to raise mountains with our fingers and we also want to be able to do it with the mouse.

When I heard George was coming on board, I asked him to do his playthrough with a m&k, because the vast majority of computer owners do not have touch devices. And if you own a copy on steam and want to discuss Godus on the steam forums, you aren't talking about the iPad version.

Personally, I use WASD to scroll the map as i collect belief. I bearly move the mouse as I hold the button and complete the songs. It's much easier than trying to push the screen around with the mouse as you collect.
