Black screen at startup, help!
Both the presentation and the initial menu are completely black.

What can I do? On windows 10 this game never worked for me. It used to freeze after startup, now everything is directly black.

You could try using the latest beta version:

Applying the OWPatch_2.0.6.132_TO_3.0.12.341.rar and then OWPatch_3.0.12.341_TO_3.0.12.342.rar to the original war directory.

What do you mean by presentation? the videos? What is your computers graphics card?
Get it working?

Same goes for me, at the launch screen in windows and the game main menu is completely black. I tried the patches but it didn't work.

if you use the launch parameter skip does it make a difference?
Have you tried launching in windowed mode? I think " -windowed " works. Alternatively Alt+Enter typically toggles full and windowed.

"-windowed" does not work. I don't know how to skip launch parameter.
When right clicking the game in your steam library go to Properties. On this screen on the bottom is says launch options, there is a text field where you input " -windowed ". Just double checking this is where you are entering it.

-windowed is not a parameter that is valid for OW (OW uses window for windowed mode). OW also doesn't use the - before parameters. With modern OW everything is a window even if its full screen (Legacy branch uses Direct Draw which has Exclusive Fullscreen for fullscreen so there is a difference).

The parameter is called skip .

I wrote the parameters as "-window, -skip" but nothing changed. Even thought the launch screen is terminated somehow, but the game (alongside the launch vids) is still fully black with no visuals.
My game directly opens on opengl by the way.

As i said, Original War parameters don't have - in them. What do you mean by "directly opens on opengl"?

Skip works but "window" does not. It still opens in fullscreen.

About opengl I was talking about the api that game runs on in windows. You know game either works with directdrive (dd) or opengl right now (maybe vulkan compability would solve this it is implamented), I referred to it because I am curious if it has anything to do with the blackscreen.

window works fine for everyone else. Though windowed like i said wouldn't help with your situation in modern versions.

Does skip solve the black screen? If so its incompatibility with 4XM video format used for one of the intro videos (Which in a version higher than what steam uses was replaced).

DirectDraw was removed in modern versions. Only the Legacy branch uses DirectDraw. Vulkan wouldn't make any difference. 99.99% of people don't get a black screen.

solved. It has nothing to do with the game or the hardware. Looks like radeon boost option from gc menu of amd is not compatible with the game.

Thanks for letting us know. I am surprised it has any effect as its supposedly for DirectX games. Technically OW does use Direct Sound, but it doesn't use Direct 3D.

I am baffled as well. The boost supposed to be enabled manually but it was enabled already and was interfering with the game's graphic rendering somehow.
