Regarding private server hosting

I haven't finished downloading it yet... so forgive me if this is obvious to those of you who have the game.
Does private server hosting still work? Would I still be able to run a server on my own, and have my friends connect to it via a direct connection of some sort (IP/URL)? Or is this lost as well with the loss of their lobby server?

To answer that question in a word: No.

dtt.scanner has Planet Explorers

To update the answer: Yes. Morse put together a patch for the Multiplayer, and it works with direct IP access. I think he is working on a LAN version, but I don't know the status.

The patch is now a sticky at the top of the MP discussions.
