Contagion
Making this game f2p might save it!
That's right! Just like Thunder Tier One recently did, breaking down the small price barrier would get new players to try this game, and that would bring back old players. And the profit for the developers? Start creating microtransactions. I assure you, they'd earn more than with current sales.

This should be done as soon as possible, to take advantage of the less-than-successful launch of NMRIH 2. Many people are hoping for a zombie survival game that serves as a modernization of the great NMRIH 1. Contagion has the potential to be one, but people don't pay for this game (despite its low price) because they know they're risking a dying community. Make it free, consider this suggestion!

Making the game free would not make a difference whatsoever. Micro transactions in a zombie source engine game? Never gonna happen.

You can support the dev through patreon, there’s a link in the main menu if you want to spend some money towards the game.

what do you mean "save it" the game is functional playable online for as long as Steam is functional

this game is not APEX or Leauge of Legends - I gited my friends copy of the game when it was on sale and we play it without any issue

everyone can do the same

if your friends are too cheap to buy the game themselves - just do the same thing gift the game to your friends - support the creators if you like the game

making it free dosent "save" anything you point to No More Room in Hell as some shining example?

Here I will trump your example with TWO examples - here are two Free games that are similar - do you see playercount skyrocketing?

There's a reason the game has open servers, so you can play with strangers like in NMRIH, don't you think? ...but from what I've seen, the community isn't very open. The people I know who have the game on their wishlist all told me the same thing: buying a game with very few players isn't a good idea...and of course, I bought it thinking I'd find people who don't mind playing with strangers, normal, sociable people.

I just requested a refund. If the community is restricted to playing only with acquaintances, there's no benefit to using the open servers. That kills the game's small community, which is a shame.

why not just gift the game to friends then and enjoy it together?

If you can play together then what is the problem? You dont need hundreds of people to play - even 2 or 3 friends is enough and if you get 7 other people then that is all you need for maximum play

Also - did you bother to ask people here on discussions if they want to team up and play? Cause I am sure you would easily find 7 other people

There’s no restriction when using the servers everyone is welcome to play them just like any other source game with servers. Also I recommend you at least try it and get some ppl to join you. It’s fun with other ppl.
Yes, it seems like a very interesting game, and Source games have that unique charm. Unfortunately, I didn't encounter people like you, interested in welcoming new players who want to play with strangers, on my first impressions. Cheers!
