Playing game with controller -- Good gameplay or bad?

Well, I see reviews from people saying it sucks to play the game with controller and they went back to keyboard and mouse.

But I also see on the Steam store page: "The developers recommend playing this game with a controller"

So what's the deal? Is it good to play with controllers or no?

I play with a controller because I have a bad back. but I think it works fine with controller.
I'm having fun with it.

The game got an autoaim mechanic which does the job. If someone doesn't want to use it (or is too lazy to look into the options menu to know which button to press), it's on them, it the game.
