I'm in the same boat with you, I really want to play the game, and I dont want to have to ask for a refund on it.
The problem only seems to happen in skirmish mode; If there are 8 or more planes of a high enough skill level and are labeled as aces, the framerate will randomly drop to 1-2 fps and the game briefly becomes totally unplayable and will not read any control input until it recovers.
I am guessing it has to do with the chaff/flares existing in the game world, because ace AI is very prone to dropping lots of chaff/flares, and the problem seems to happen when 8-15 ace level AI planes are dropping them in massive bunches all at once. You also don't have to be looking at the chaff/flares for the framerate to spike, either; I looked directly at the sky where very little to nothing is being rendered, and the framerate was still spiking.
The game runs smoothly otherwise in campaign or challenge mode, or if the enemy planes are grunts of a low enough skill level that they rarely (if ever) use countermeasures. I'm running the Incubator version of Vector Thrust, if that helps.
It says:
"Runtime Error!
Program D....
The application has requestede the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support for more information."
It happened during the beginning of the mission.
Here's the screenshot.

Hello there, be sure to follow these possible bug fixes.

Thanks. I've tried all of those steps in that thread but unfortunately the problem still persists. I was using the default branch.
I pasted the recent details from the Ogre.log here:

It appears certain files have not downloaded correctly. Are you sure you verified the game cache? Doing so will download the missing/corrupted files.
Yes, I have verified it. It had to reacquire 2 files. But the problem still persists.
I've also tried by copying the mission 4 files to the BattleSce folder and playing it as a single mission thorugh the Battle Scenario option, and still giving me the crash with the same error.
CPU: FX-8120 @4.0GHz
GPU: R9 290x
16 GB RAM@1600
running fullscreen@1080p
Game crashes at cutscene/dialog after a mission in campaign, specifically the third one. happens 100% of the time, Have tried with 2 different aircraft. always occurs during the same line of dialog, towards the end of the scene. printscreen will not work in fullscreen in Windows 10, but the crash popup is hidden in a window behind the game anyway.
Incubator build, does that vary in file content anymore?
Verified game cache.
