Do you have to tend an orchard the whole time?

I'm just playing regular old banished with a few tweaks, extra leather and such. Normally after planting an orchard it takes like a year or two to grow. Do you need a villager assigned to it the whole time or can you send that guy off doing something else?

Yep, until the orchard starts producing fruit you can send them elsewhere once they have planted the trees.
I actually think it's more like 3 years before the fruit appears.
