Take On Mars

Take On Mars

The Great Frontier (A mod that will most likely never be made, but I can dream)
So during my free-time I've thought up of a total conversion. The premise is to give a player a greater range of freedom as to how they will colonize Mars and to add more realism as well as feel you are running a space company.

The main focus would be the tech-tree, in the start you would only start off with late 1960's, early 1970's technology, which would comprise of a small impactor probe, an early digital camera, an SSTV transmitter, and a rocket capable of taking the probe to the moon.

You will progress by first building orbiting satellites then sending probes and finally landers and rovers to map out and research the locations on the targetted body, then you you have to unlock Mars, and do the same. Finally you will have other targets you can unlock and explore like Vesta, Venus, Phobos, and Titan (as well as the other locations already in game) which would also can send satellites, probes, and landers to.

Venus wouldn't be accessable to manned missions simply due to how horribly corrosive, hot, and thick the atmosphere is combined with its near Earth-like gravity. It wouldn't be worth it or safe in the time-frame of this game.

As you progress through tech levels you will unlock 4 different manned exploration programs that you can research depending on how eager you are to send manned missions out:

-The first option will allow you to research and send a manned mission to the moon to build an outpost with 70's-80's-early 90's tech which will then after a few missions develop into a moon base and allow you to research and build a mass driver to send manned missions to Mars and else-where. There would be no 3D printers so you would have to rely inflatable habitats, supply missions and eventually build bulky mining, refining, and part making machines to supliment. (until you later research the 3D printer)

-The second would be like the first only with 90's to modern day technology, again you would not have a 3D printer and would have to rely on supply runs, inflatable habs and large equipment to make parts.

This would also let you develop the Mars Direct sub-plan, if you choose to, that would allow you to skip building a mass driver and go directly to Mars where you would build an outpost which would eventually become a full fledged base. It would be based around the Mars Direct plan.

-The third option would be a Mars One like option, it would be near future and be cheap compared to the others but would consist of you being dropped off on Mars with meager supplies, a small lander, and a 3D printer and told good luck. :P

-The forth would be a near future focus and include the vanilla game tech.

The end game would be building a craft on Mars, Phobos, or Deimos which will take a manned mission to Vesta and Titan. Titan would be resource and fuel rich but you would have to be cautious with the Methane atmosphere since if your base or pressurized vehicle was to leak, a fire or spark could trigger a catastrophic explosion that could rip the entire base apart.

Some other things the mod would have is that you would have to test out landers, rovers, and manned craft at either the Mars Yard or at a desert or artic location since you wouldn't want to send an expensive craft out into the unknown not knowing if it even works. :P

(More ideas, crafts and locations that could be used will be posted here later on.)

=Edit: I removed the Soviet/NASA design proposal since that would add too many craft and would have to be a mod itself. Plus I started to feel it wouldn't fit in with the concept of the game.

Example Start explained plus starter research concepts:

Your space program will start with a low tech probe, spherical and similar in design to the Luna II impactor, a small lunar rocket (capable of sending small craft to the moon), a basic battery, a short range antennae, and a black and white 35mm camera capable of taking pictures of the ground like the B&W camera in the game now. The probe also has a small thruster with enough fuel to slow its decent before hitting the surface.

(Luna II for reference)

From there you would research techs similar to this example I made here to get to the lunar lander:
http://imgur.com/JMmXWOX

After all the required tech is researched you would be able to perform lunar lander missions, the lander would be modeled after the Surveyor lander, so it would be similar in size and design to the Small Lander in game now, only it is not as "meaty" as the small lander I guess you could say. :P The lander would also act as the Small Lander does now, allowing you to carry out early missions and equip with various smaller devices you research until you move up to the next type of craft.

(Surveyor I for reference)

I'm going to try to make a list of references for the various craft that could be used in the mod later on.

Holy wow, that is quite an ambitious plan. I love it :) I guess though, the most time consuming part here would be making the visual assets, that is vehicles, probes, and so on. I certainly would love to see something like this though..

Thanks Dram! Really I'm just throwing ideas out there, maybe it will inspire someone? :P But yeah, it would be ambitious, not impossible but probably pretty time consuming for sure. I tried my best to cut down on the vehicles so it wouldn't be redundant. The only place where there would be multiples of vehicles would be the various techs of manned missions to show improvements in the technology. Landing on the moon in the Early Landing module you're not going to have luxaries like HUDs, large touch screen moniters and spacious living quarters like you would in the later tech.

Here is the vehicle list and the inspirations/references to how they might look:

-Unmanned Lunar (No atmosphere bodies only):
Lunar Probe (Luna II)
Lunar Lander (Ye-6 Model like the Luna 9)
Large Lunar Lander (Surveyor)
Small Lunar Rover (Chang'e 3 and Yutu)
Large Lunar Rover (Luna 17 Lander and the Lunokhod Rover)

-Unmanned Venus and Titan:
Extreme Environment Probe (A Pioneer Venus Multiprobe or the Huygens Probe)
Extreme Environment Lander (Venera 9 Lander)
Extreme Environment Rover (Scarab Rover, which is actually designed for the moon, but the design looks like it could work for extreme environments.)

-Unmanned Mars:
Early Mars Lander (Viking)
Early Mars Rover (Mars 3 and Prop-M Rover)

-Space Suits
Early Medium Suit (Gemini Space Suit)
Early Heavy Suit (Apollo A7L "Moon Suit")
Modern Medium Suit (M-Suit)
Modern Heavy Suit Medium Duriation (I-Suit)
Modern Heavy Suit Long Duriation (Z-Series Suit)
Titan/Future Suit (Mk III Suit)

=Manned Early Lunar
Early Landing Module (LESA Shelter)
Early Scout-Rover (The Lunar Roving Vehicle)
Early Mobile Lab (Mobile Lunar Lab)
Early Cargo Vehicle (DLB Lunokhod 1 Concept)
Early Supply Delivery (LEM Truck)

=Manned Modern Lunar
Modern Landing Module (Altair Lander)
Modern Scout-Rover (LOTRAN Rover)
Modern Mobile Lab (SEV Craft)
Modern Cargo Truck (SEV Craft)
Modern Supply Delivery (Altair Cargo Varient)

=Manned Early Mars
Early Landing Module (MEM Concept, Smaller variation)
Early Supply Delivery (MEM Concept)

-Note: Most vehicles would simply be the lunar vehicles carried to Mars.

=Manned Mars Direct (Modern Mars)
Landing Module (Mars Direct Habitat Unit and Cargo Lander)

=Manned Mars-One (Alternate Cheap Route)
Landing Module (Mars-One Dragon Capsule)
Supply Delivery (Mars-One Dragon Cargo Capsule)

One thing to remember with locations (on mars especially) is that you have to find somewhere that puts a reasonable amount of interesting things in a relatively small area. The Olympus Mons calderae form a bowl that is between 60 and 80 km across, and in parts of the Vallis Marineris you could stand on the 'valley' floor and have the walls be over the horizon!

The interesting thing about Olympus Mons caldera is that it looks relatively flat from space, but up close it's pocked with craters, ancient lava flows and small ridges, which is why I think it would be perfect. For the three Valles Marineris locations, Notcis Labyrinthus I imagined I could get a good cliff, for the Chryse Region there are plenty of dunes, dry streams, and craters. Melas Chasma would be in the plains itself and be unlocked when you research manned missions since Melas is considered a possible manned site in real life due to the higher atmospheric pressures in the Canyon.

Hellas Basin would also be unlocked with manned missions and is a point of interest due to to it being the lowest point on Mars and the atmospheric pressure being high enough there to slightly pass the Triple point (pressure at which water can exist as a liquid). I wouldn't be trying to capture the fact that Olympus Mons is a huge volcano, Valles Marineris is a huge trench, or that Hellas Basin is a huge impact crater, but rather the maps would simply be points of interests located within those locations.

A thing I am weary about though is the Venus and Titan maps. On Venus I would have to find some way to represent the corrosive properties of the atmosphere and I also don't know if there is anything in the game code that would make extreme heat or cold effect vehicles or EVA suits. On Titan it should be that when you mix methane and oxygen together and create a spark or fire that it will cause an explosion.

Colonizing Titan would require a bit of planning, since if there was a leak and explosion, you would have to design a way to prevent it from damaging other rooms of the base and possibly starting a chain-reaction that would blow up the entire base.

So lately I've been working on Claudia Crater (4 Vesta location), I have the height map done and am satisfied. Ground textures and rock placement is next.

I also got bored and made a quick doodle of my idea for the Lunar probe:
http://imgur.com/KrvaJ9R

The lunar probe would, in the overhaul, be your starting craft. It would be a little cheaper than the standard probe* as it wouldn't require heat-shielding and would only be traveling to the moon.

It work much like the probe in game now. It would start the map falling out of the sky, and then when it is close to the surface it would fire off its thrusters, expending the fuel but slowing it down so that it makes a relatively soft landing. The camera is mounted inside the the probe, and the lens looks through a transparent, protective shielding on the probe that protects the camera from dust and impact. It would just be used for exploration/probing missions on the moon.

Now that I look at it, I think the camera should be looking out the bottom like with the normal probe.

*I call it the Mars Buoy myself. :D

Looks a bit like an upside-down Марс-3. Actually looks a lot like Luna 1/2

Really nice stuff Elemeth :) Love the doodle of the probe, looking good!

I'm thinking of ways to streamline the idea and cut down on stuff that would probably be too excessive and unneeded.
Dwarf80 18 Nov, 2020 @ 7:50am
what ever happened to the idea think tank going here, looked like a plan of creative ideas starting to come about, since the game was opened to modding, taking all the modded ideas into account, blend until frothy with explosive content, and you can come up with another scenerio other than just another....survival game..as if there wasnt enough of them already...but i def like the idea of campaign missions, working for the space program be it mining or probing the outer reaches for future generations to come, creating future space cadet training for the future..to infinity and beyond !....oh that was from a movie.
