Beagle 2 and Mars 3
Opening words.

I've been doing some research into these two to try and locate them in TOM for the achievements.

As you read this keep in mind: my research, and this discussion, is based on the assumption that TOM is based on actual facts.

On a side note; In TOM I am currently at Tech level 7. with Victoria, Kaiser and Gale Craters as selectable points of landing.

The short story:

Beagle 2 and Mars 3 are nowhere near Victoria, Kaiser and Hale crater. And will be hard to get to either unless more landing sites open up at a higher tech level that currently are not being displayed.

Long winded version:
  • Beagle 2: From what I've been able to find, Beagle 2 was to land in the eastern part of Isidis Planitia. scientists believed that it did land but bounced on landing and landed in a crater. in what state it is in was unknown. Isidis Planitia is located in the Hellas Quadrangle, closest point I can land is Kaiser crater, Noachis Quadrangle which is west of Hellas Quadrangle. haven't had the time to do a calculation on distance but given the speed at which a rover drives and how prone they are to malfunctions of the wheel, There is next to no chance of getting there any time soon.

  • Mars 3: after some searching, Mars 3 has supposedly crash landed near Ptolemaeus Crater, Phaethonis Quadrangle. closest point to this location would again be Kaiser Crater but you're talking about going to the far south western corner of the map. we are talking about 3 times the distance of trying to get to Beagle 2 from Kaiser Crater.

Notes:

If anyone desires it, I can provide a list of Area Coordinates, and web-links for all points of reference.

Hi, really interesting analysis there. To be honest however, Take On Mars does not use real locations of Beagle 2 and Mars 3, it would mean a specific location for each of them (at present we have 3 locations, each 4x4km). Thus, they have been placed within the existing locations in the campaign.

well there goes that Idea out the window. I was expecting to literally drive to the ass end of Mars to find it.

awesome job with TOM though.

Yeah I would LOVE to have the whole of Mars, but alas it is impossible to do in the detail we have done the locations in. Yeah you could generate it of course, but it won't have the same level of finesse.

@Dram: Sorry for digging this old thread out. But did you took a look at the ESA Homepage for the 3D RADAR data of "Mars Express"? AFIAK the data are open to all and would improve terrain heights a lot.

Even NASA used them for their "Opportunity" animation to show the world how great that rover looks on Mars! ;)

Cheers for the heads up Hyphon, will definitely take a look.

As for the locations of Beagle 2 and Mars 3, those locations (Ptolemaeus Crater and Isidis Planitia) have recently been added, so the positions are as close to reality as possible.

Awesome to hear this

the Beagle 2 was recently located on mars, it failed to deploy properly but was found intact on the surface, http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/jan/16/lost-beagle-2-spacecraft-found-mars would the location and state of it be chaged in game or would it be left where it was originally thought to be.

So you can't do the rest of mars. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to seeing Olympus Mons
