Hi, best is to go creative mode in asteroid world (no planets), use Sandbox named "Red ship v2" to take your time to learn all about the Nuclear Ion space ship first.

Doing so gave me the experience I needed to create more, here is what I did :

First thing to do would be a "Nuclear Ion space ship" in creative mode.
= You need :

1 - Cockpit.
2 - Gyroscope.
3 - Nuclear Reactor.
4 - ION Thrusters on all sides.

5 - Enter the cockpit, try the ship and add more of #2, #3 and #4 if needed to have a better maneuverability = it goes with the total mass of the ship so you will need more on bigger ships.

6 - Full all its containers + connectors + O2/H2 Gens to know if it can fly when full load and add more of #2, #3 and #4 if needed to have a better maneuverability.

The rest will become easier if you start with the above.

___________

For new players I also recommend to start in the world named "Earth planet" in Original Content Category because the Respawn station is already done and players can focus on building their first scout ship to explore and find all the Rich ore spots of the planet.
+
It is OK to grind the blocks on existing stations and ships to build your first ship.
+
Also the best premade world to try their first Warship or Fighter against the enemy SPRT stations on all planets, moons and space.

Veteran Tips :
-> Rich ore spot is where all ores can be found close to each other within 1Km.

-> Find Gold next to ice lake and all the other ores will be close around it, gives ice with all ores that is the best place to build all we need.

If you prefer to watch Tutorial videos :

The Official SE Tutorials are in-game F1 but I recommend Splitsie's Tutos because he is good at explaining.

Splitsie's Space Engineers tutorials Playlist on YouTube :

Steam added new features in Shift+Tab, feature like able to Pin YouTube in-game :

In case you don't know me I must specifiy :

-> I am not a SE Dev but forum Moderator community helper/game tester, also very active player helping the SE community since 2013 because it's my Favorite Sandbox game on Steam and they gave me the [Dev] Tag so I can be admin of the Workshop to help more.
Gravity is harder to deal with than the build system. :se:

Fear not, unlike many games that penalize you for undoing builds, if you need to undo something, you get 100% of your materials back, with the exception of batteries. If you grind down a battery, the cells are turned to scrap, but the scrap can be put into a refinery to recover the iron, so it's not a total loss.

It's also easier to build stuff in space than in a gravity well (on a planet or moon), hence the gravity comment. :cozyspaceengineersc:
I remember feeling overwhelmed a little bit at first. Truthfully, there are games that can overwhelm you worse than this one. Play around a little bit, you'll get the hang of it. Probably my best tips would be:

Find a good source of power. If you start playing in creative mode, use a reactor. They deliver plenty of reliable power.

Gyroscopes are absolutely necessary for any ship to function, other than rovers. Gyroscopes allow the ship to rotate and controls pitch, yaw, bank, etc.

Finally, the thrusters, which all have strengths and weaknesses. A minimum of 6, (one thruster for each side of a cube) will give your ship a balanced control. Next, is to remember that Atmospheric thrusters (they look like jet engines because they are) only work in an atmosphere. The higher you go and the thinner the air gets, the more inefficient they become. Atmo thrusters run on just electricity.

Ion Thrusters, are similar to Atmos, except they pretty much work ONLY in a vaccum. They still work inside of an atmosphere, but at about 20% of their usual strength. They only need electricity too. However, they are also some of the weakest thrusters, but easy to set up in space, and also have a tremendous power draw.

Lastly, the Hydrogen thrusters. These need, well Hyrdogen in order to operate. The ship only needs to be powered, but their electrical draw is very minimal. However, they need Hydrogen to run, and you have to ensure that every hydrogen thruster is properly connected via conveyors to a source of hydrogen. Such as a Hygrogen tank.
In addition to their immense power output, they also work in any atmospheric condition. In other words, unlike atmos, or Ion thrusters, they receive NO penalty anywhere.

PLEASE NOTE: Hydrogen thrusters consume A LOT of hydrogen. I mean, A LOT! Many a beginning engineer underestimated their consumption, only to plummet out of the sky and crash into a moon or planet because of this. (I've even done this, and I have over 1.7k hours in this game.)

You'll find several learning curves within the game. Then you'll be introduced to a few more.

If you are coming from EGS and are wondering..... Yes SE allows you to walk around in your ship while it's moving. Both games built on the same engine. One dev team saying it can't be done, the other proving them wrong. But neither dev team allowing full instability in space. Both games have locked rotation, and only allow you to turn off directional stabilizers.... which makes space feel so unspacey.

this is all great advice, and after refunding the game (It was overwhelming) ive decided to come back to try again.

Not at all.
Keen created their own game engine. VRage is used in ME, VRage2 in SE, and VRage3 in SE2.
Empyrion uses Unity.

ive already vegun watching it!
Failure is quite possible in your first few built, don't be afraid to start again after you realize you missed something important to ship/base/station/whatever. You can built anything, really. Some have made train, mechwarrior, drones, missiles and much more.

Welcome engineer.

I would try the classic "learning to survive" and the original "Crashed Red Ship" to learn after seeing the cool things in "Red Ship v2". BTW, Depending on the DLC you decide to get, Keen seems to have implemented parts of DLC with each mission. IE playing a mode in the original might change a bit after you get DLCs.
