There is no connection to any book, except for the title. And maybe a general idea of two people traveling, or something like that.

I don't know why this book-reference keeps popping up; it's completely pointless.

Not quite true that there's nothing to it. There are several elements that were transfered into the game, inlcuding names, side characters, movement concepts (the cloud in the novel), how monkey is controlled etc etc
