If they're making games for PS3 they should be pretty familiar with OpenGL btw. Since it's easier however to port from xbox -> windows than ps3 -> windows since xboxOS and windows OS share similarities, a lot of devs fall into the trap of taking that easy route.
It's rare but i've seen a few games ported directly from PS3 to Windows and they tend to come with cross platform support too with Mac & Linux when it happens, i don't remember which game it was but it was some game i saw just the other day.
Is UE4 supposed to be more easily portable?
One of my favorite games (Rune) was written in UE1 on Linux, Mac & Windows
The first UT game was too as well as PS2 and Dreamcast.
America's Army (UE2) was also cross platform.
Devastation (UE2) was for Windows & Linux
Killing Floor (UE2) was cross platform
Postal 2 (UE2) was cross platform
UT 2003 & 2004 (UE2) were also cross platform
Dungeon Defenders (UE3) is cross platform
Mighty No. 9 (Unreleased UE3) is also going to be cross platform.
It's like cross platform support has weakend in the unreal engine over the years. No game is confirmed with linux support for UE4 yet.
Out the vast, vast majority of major games that are not released on Linux, picking this one in particular to make a post about is a bit...odd. I mean it's a pretty bare bones port in general and there far more high profile games that don't get ported.
Just to prove that there is a market out there for linux games. And of course i boycott some games if i think they had an opportunity to make the game linux compatible but didn't to support this. This is just an example of that.
Exactly. Linux has ~1.5 market share. Look at Steam stats and it has < 2%. Mac OS is almost as pathetic.
Asking devs to put games on platforms not used for gaming and unsuitable for gaming is idiotic. Complete waste of dev effort and extra support hassles.
If you're serious about playing PC games, get a PC suitable for PC gaming.
