Would've bought if it worked on linux.
This is one of those games that was released only on consoles that i always wanted to try playing. Since it was originally a PS3 exclusive title if i'm not wrong, i'm quite surprised that in the gaming culture where gamers are moving more and more towards linux (and god knows what change SteamOS might bring...) that this game was rather than ported directly from PS3 to Linux & Windows using opengl (as PS3 uses a modified OpenGL code) the devs chose to instead take the easy route and use Xbox's DirectX code to make the porting process a bit quicker.

Sloppy in my opinion, despite what some people are saying here, that the game is unengaing and linear, i still wanted to play it, but got turned off when i saw theres no linux support.

Just getting it out there.

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=29281 — it mostly works fine except the gamepad support and some .NET installer quirks. Just like _almost_ any other UE3-powered game. Won't hold my breath for native port though. Those big console-only publishers are reluctant to leave their comfort zones.

Wine support != Official native support :)

If they're making games for PS3 they should be pretty familiar with OpenGL btw. Since it's easier however to port from xbox -> windows than ps3 -> windows since xboxOS and windows OS share similarities, a lot of devs fall into the trap of taking that easy route.

It's rare but i've seen a few games ported directly from PS3 to Windows and they tend to come with cross platform support too with Mac & Linux when it happens, i don't remember which game it was but it was some game i saw just the other day.

There are issues though. OGL on PS3 isn't the same as it is on GNU/Linux. I heard it's a sort of subset. UE3 also isn't easily portable, Icculus told about it. There's a central UE3 source repository but it's getting heavily (maybe not very) modified for each game being made. Basically, it means that every game should be ported almost from scratch as I understood. There's no UE3 Linux port because there are as many UE3's as there are games on it.

It's a (sony) modified version of OpenGL for Embedded systems. It should still be remarkably similar. Beats me why Sony didn't just stick with standard OpenGL ES though...

Is UE4 supposed to be more easily portable?

One of my favorite games (Rune) was written in UE1 on Linux, Mac & Windows
The first UT game was too as well as PS2 and Dreamcast.
America's Army (UE2) was also cross platform.
Devastation (UE2) was for Windows & Linux
Killing Floor (UE2) was cross platform
Postal 2 (UE2) was cross platform
UT 2003 & 2004 (UE2) were also cross platform
Dungeon Defenders (UE3) is cross platform
Mighty No. 9 (Unreleased UE3) is also going to be cross platform.

It's like cross platform support has weakend in the unreal engine over the years. No game is confirmed with linux support for UE4 yet.

Unless you have any experience in 3D engine programming, you have absolutely no business making assumptions about how easy porting code is or is not.

Out the vast, vast majority of major games that are not released on Linux, picking this one in particular to make a post about is a bit...odd. I mean it's a pretty bare bones port in general and there far more high profile games that don't get ported.

+1 for Linux/SteamOS version.

You choose to run an OS you know doesn't have good game support then whine that a game isn't ported to it. Right. :squirtmeh:

Linux has pretty decent game support by now actually. It's just that developers and publishers aren't even trying to make their games cross platform that bothers me. The chances of me buying a game if it has linux support increases by about 60%, just because it's cross platform. I've bought games that i hardly even want to play just to support the movement of games to linux.

Just to prove that there is a market out there for linux games. And of course i boycott some games if i think they had an opportunity to make the game linux compatible but didn't to support this. This is just an example of that.

I would love to buy this game. Ninja Theory is one of my favorite devs after I played Heavenly Sword and I will happily buy this title. It's one of the very, VERY few titles I'll still be willing to buy for Windows nowadays, but a Linux port would be even more enticing for me.

Most games don't work on linux. It'll get better now that steam OS is a linux based system, but previously that wasn't the case. Most games simply were not made for linux due to the low player base. It simply wasn't profitable for developers to develop for such a low user base.

Indeed, lets hope that this changes. But still like I said it really isn't that big of a deal to thrust a game on linux if you already got as close to it as mac.

Exactly. Linux has ~1.5 market share. Look at Steam stats and it has < 2%. Mac OS is almost as pathetic.

Asking devs to put games on platforms not used for gaming and unsuitable for gaming is idiotic. Complete waste of dev effort and extra support hassles.

If you're serious about playing PC games, get a PC suitable for PC gaming.
