Can't give skills to dwarves
I have collected a bunch of skill books for my dwarves. But none of them seem to be usable on any dwarves I have. I'm at level 8 now, and my dwarves are all called "who am I?" and I cannot give them names nor discover their names, nor can I use skills on them. I've not played this game in a few years so I'm no longer certain if that's a feature or a bug. If anyone has any advice let me know.

I tried creating a new world, and reloading - reinstalling the game, but still, none of my dwarves are able to learn any skills and are all stuck at "who am I?" part. Any advice?

This worked for me when just changing the language in save had no effect. I changed the language to Russian in main menu, entered the save and while no dwarves had names I could give them skills. Thank you so much!

I had this bug as well.

I missed the suggestion here to try changing languages, but reinstalling then starting a new game fixed the issue for me.

I ran into this bug on my very first game having never played at all previously - thought it was just because I was in the first level so good to know I'm not going crazy!

Glad you managed to fix it, but those "Who Am I?" dwarves will keep their unknown name since that's stored in the save files; new maps will generate the dwarf names fine from now.
so that's the reason.
i thought its a new mechanics thing

Yep, had this again also but just kept restarting the save until it worked.

Why is this bug not fixed yet? I also encountered this after not playing a while - no mods and some doc. This needs to be fixed, let’s report it until devs figure it out

I'm on my second reinstall and multiple language changes (from english to multiple other languages, switch back) and still have "WHO AM I?" on Dwarves and unable to apply skill books.

The language change fix worked for me, too! Thank you!

(I changed the language, then started a new game. Names and all appeared as they should. Played for a few minutes, saved, changed language back, and deleted the original game. So far so good! I didn't re-install at all, just changed the language and started a new save.)

Nice fix. The language change worked, was an old save of my oldest son and I went into it to find that blank names and no skills thing. Found this thread, tried the fix. I Backed out, changed language to German, went in and looked at their names, then backed back out and changed back to English and all was well.
