Account is optional on original.
Originally, all 23 DLCs were being sold for Bioware points (which you had to buy with regular money first in order to get the DLC).
If you want to play just the base game without all the DLC you certainly should not need to login into an EA account -- the game should work just fine. You only need to login with your EA account to authorize the DLC content which for the original game is installed separately and manually.
That said, EA has recently released an updated version of Mass Effect 2 (2010 Edition) which now contains and automatically installs all the DLC but requires Origin or EA App to run.
As for your password reset, you can only request it to the email account you used to register the account. If you aren't getting the email check your spam folder and if that doesn't work try contacting EA support.
