A little bit of all. The lizard animations make their movement look stiff and slow, almost as if they don't really pose a threat. It would be cool if they screamed and also jumped left or right to avoid getting shot. Maybe make them run on the player and beat the hell out of him too? Same goes for their design, they look pretty friendly (not badly designed, just not as " blood thirsty " as I would expect them to be ). The other 2 issues are variety and the way they are placed on the map.
By variety I mean that there are not many different types, other than color change (or maybe I just didn't make enough progress? idk ).
By " way they are placed on the map " I mean, they just stand there and wait for you to enter the room. What is worse is that they are sitting ducks since they are standing in open areas without something to take cover. Here are some ideas for that :
- Have some units patrol areas
- The units who just stand could be hidden behind a wall or a crate to attack the player without him noticing.
- Also, since the maps have a sci-fi look, I would suggest adding some units in front of a computer or something to make it look like they are working (instead of just standing there).
Great points about the designs/lack of aggression. I think we did a better job in Exoverse, but this is definitely true in Wrack. Same goes for the lack of variety. Enemies interacting with the environment in some way would also be a great way to make the game feel less "video gamey". I wouldn't want to go too overboard with it (since it is a video game and knows it's a video game), but this would be a fantastic way to spice things up.
