Game wont load after Windows 10 Update
Hi. Wonder if anybody can help. My PC has just updated to the latest version of Windows 10 (1903). At which point every steam game I own has promptly stopped working. I have checked for Windows updates and I am all up to date. The following happens when I try to load any of the games.

Transport Fever. I get the Steam loading popup. The TF icon briefly briefly flashes up on my task bar, then disappears and nothing happens.

Life is Feudal Forest Village. Load window briefly appears, says not responding, That bit always happens, but after that it would always load up. Now the window just disappears and nothing happens.

Cities Skylines. I get the infamous Microsoft Visual C++ error message. It says: Runtime Error. Programme. This Application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the Application's Support Team for assistance.

Having googled this I see it appears to be a widespread and very frequent issue. I have tried uninstalling cities skylines, deleting all the folders and re-installing. Still with the same result.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Check windows update. maybe C++ needs updating.

Running Windows Update is a good idea anyway after installing a major update in case there are any fixes that have been released since.

The install guide i provided lists to back up all the main folders so he wouldn't lose anything anyway.

Checked Windows update. All up to date. Downloaded latest versions of C++ as well. No change. I'll try the uninstall and clean install of Cities Skylines tomorrow after work. See if I can at least get that working. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks to everybody who has chipped in so far with advice and help. I am very grateful to you all.

Right well I tried the full clean reinstall as per Cybervibes guide above. Still no joy. I then contacted Steam, who promptly fobbed me off to Paradox. I've just raised a ticket with them, so We'll see what happens.

I hope to God this is not going to be a re-occurring issue every time Windows runs a major update. They do run them rather often. If it is, then I will be forced to consider whether using this platform and/or Paradox is worth all the grief.

Maybe try running the Wndows command (sfc /scannow) to make sure all Windows files are OK.

I just remembered, that I reinstalled Steam one time and did it manually without using the unistaller, then put Steam on a different drive.

When I reinstalled Steam, it messed up the registry and then Steam gave me weird errors.

I used CCleaner as it has an option to uninstall stubborn programs.

If a clean install didn't help then it has to be Steam or Windows, i would reinstall steam and run these checks on Windows
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4026529/windows-10-using-system-file-checker

I know you've reinstalled Visual C but try this method after you have completed the scans and reinstall of Steam.

Step 1: To uninstall the package:
a. Open Programs and Features.
b. From the list, find Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package and click on it.
c. Right click on it and select Uninstall
d. Restart the computer.

Step 2: Download and install all the packages below
https://www.itechtics.com/microsoft-visual-c-redistributable-versions-direct-download-links/

I have 12 Visual C installs, both x86 and x64 versions of 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2017 so make sure you have all of them installed, i don't remember which ones were installed by Steam and the game so best to grab them all.

Only other solution would be to repair Windows if all of the above fails, go to the heading "How can I fix a corrupt registry in Windows 10?" here and run all the fixes
https://windowsreport.com/corrupt-registry-windows-8/#1

Edit: Lol took too long to write all that out Mark beat me to a few of the points :)

Just to let you know the outcome of this. I got hold of Paradox support. They suggested most of what you suggested. No joy there, but we got their in the end. Turns out I needed to run the game in Compatibility Mode and disable the full screen optimisations from the Properties on the exe.

All working again now. Very impressed with the support from Paradox. The guy dealing with me was very thorough and very patient with me. I made sure when I replied back to confirm it was working again, to let him know how grateful I was for all his time and patience.

Thank you once again to everybody in this thread who took the time to help me out. It is very much appreciated.

Well that's a new one, thanks for posting the remedy as it might help someone else along the way.

Yeah, it sounds like there is still an issue that is being worked around. None of those options should be needed at all.

Would be interesting to know if that install of Windows was an upgrade from an earlier version of Windows
orinocco 2 Sep, 2019 @ 7:38am
It was. It upgraded to the 1903 version.

Hey I had all the same issues and did all that was suggested above and it still didn't work.

Finally messed around with the game and got it working now.

Resolution that worked for me:
I browsed local game files, and installed the paradox launcher... once that installed I launched the game with steam and it worked for me. Created a paradox account from scratch and GG!

I hope this helps someone!
