PROBLEM: Game Won't Launch
Windows 7, 64 bit.

I try launching the game through Steam - I get the CD key dialog, then click OK. Steam's profile tells me I'm in Cities: Skylines for about 2 seconds, and the game's icon shows on task bar. Then it immediately exits, with no dialog or screen - and Steam goes back to just "Online" (no longer in the game).

I've tried setting the EXE to run as Administrator, no change. I've tried temporarily disabling my UAC, no change.

So - anyone have any ideas? I noticed there's a dozen or so of these posts, with no real resolution.

Have you made sure that your antiviruse or firewall isn't interacting with it negatively?

Windows Security Essentials, and did try disabling that - with no luck.

Same problem here. I launch the exe, it shows up in the task manager for about 2 seconds and then it's just gone. No error message, no output_log created. Nothing to say what went wrong and why.
WerFault seems to start up with it, so there obviously is an error. Just nothing to say what it is.

Things I've tried (from various sources):

1. Reinstall the VCDIST (64bit).
2. Run as administrator (the Cities.exe)
3. Disable AV (Security Essentials)
4. Disable UAC
5. Repair/validate files
6. Update Steam / Restart Steam
7. Restart PC

Nothing seems to work.

I've been to their personal Paradox forums, and we're not the only ones. Seems to be an issue with no real resolution yet. There's an output_log.txt file in the CITIES_DATA folder, and that contains the typical message we're all experiencing:

(Filename: C:/buildslave/unity/build/artifacts/generated/common/runtime/UnityEngineDebug.gen.cpp Line: 56) ColossalFramework.Steamworks.SteamInitializationException: Steam initialization has failed beyond repair or you do not own the game.

"Steam initialization has failed beyond repair or you do not own the game"

Peculiar, because I bought it right from Steam. So something's wonky.

Huh. I've checked my CITIES_DATA folder multiple times, and I'm certain I don't have an output_log. I hope this isn't a "same issue, differnt problem" situation or theres even more wonkiness than first thought.

System spec please.

OS: Win 7, 64 bit
GPU: GeForce GTX 680
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+
Memory: 4 GB

I know my CPU and Memory are a little ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but that shouldn't prevent the game from starting outright without message and I could live with the lag if the game actually wanted to work.

My output_log.txt file is located in :

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Cities_Skylines\Cities_Data

(wherever you put your Steam, the common\Cities_Skylines\Cities_Data folder.)

Did you update to the latest Nvidia drivers?
Zoob 11 Mar, 2015 @ 12:16pm
Yes, I should have mentioned that -- that was the first thing I'd done, even before installing the game. I typically keep up with the driver updates.

ColossalFramework.Steamworks.SteamInitializationException: Steam initialization has failed beyond repair or you do not own the game.

is the error. Searching that, I'm only finding issues related to CS. It's a strange one. Hopefully a fix is in the works, or someone comes up with a resolution.

Disable the steam overlay
Zoob 11 Mar, 2015 @ 12:21pm
I doubt that will make a difference, Steam will still be bound to the game (for SteamPlay and for DRM if it uses Steam DRM and the like). I'll give it a whirl, can't hurt....

The other thing you can do is verify the integrity. There was an issue earlier.
Zoob 11 Mar, 2015 @ 12:23pm
Disabling overlay does nothing differently, still an issue. I have verified the files also, that was mentioned initially. This is a strange one.

I am sorry Zoob that I wasn't any help :-(.
