Fun with Heathcliffe
Today I wanted to start another city. I looked at Cliffside Bay, one of the three new European default maps and liked it's potential. However, as many have already complained, it has no inland water source. This normally doesn't bother me, since I use the Eco Friendly Sewage Plant which means I don't have to pollute my waterways or worry about current direction. but, I did want a river, so I edited the map and gave it one. It's now Heathcliffe ;)

For a quicker build, I've used unlimited wealth and unlock all milestones. My goals for this city will be purely aesthetic, nothing too large, just attractive and functional. I started this morning and 5 hours later, I'm at 73k pop and it's all looking fine. I'm starting to see heavy traffic but no jams yet and so it will soon be time to start public transport.
Initial road layout

And of course plumbing (worst chore in the game)

I'm always trying out new ideas in every city I build and this one is no exception. Here's a low residential district that I wanted to use abstract layout. These, believe it or not, are all straight roads. If you start dragging them out but attempt to connect them at an acute angle, the road bends. So here's my web ;)

I have a handful of education assets that I wanted to put together to create a university campus. Throw in some parks, many pedestrian paths, a swimming pool and other sports assets and voila ;) I noticed a discussion today where the op wanted more parks and pedestrian paths, and wondered if there was a mod to enable that. No mod required, it's all there. In fact the european style buildings make pedestrian pathing very natural and easy as you can see.

Everyone has been talking about the tunnels and wall to wall buildings that we got from the 1.1 update, but not much has been said about the rest of the goodies.
The new update offers many new landmarks to unlock and so as a side goal I'm working my way through them. The nice thing about these is that they aren't blocked by mod usage, you just have to unlock them, which gives me a nice set of new challenges.

I'm looking forward to unlocking the Sports Arena ;)

And here's the traffic overlay... no jams yet. There is a little congestion but nothing severe. I'm quite happy with this, especially since there is no public transport or cargo rail yet, but it is time to put those in.

Hope this gave you some ideas and inspiration ;)

I really like the webbed roads you made.. something I will try out myself. Besides that those european unlocks look pretty damn sweet. I'm looking forward to see how your city develop.

Thanks. The webbed road layout was a quick way for me to fill that whole district in and avoid grids and the bonus was that it left me with a large space in the middle which allowed me to plop not one but two of the bloody huge secondary schools lol.
Yeah these new assets are sweet. I have now unsubscribed to the previous Gerkin asset I've been using almost since release. CO's Gerkin is just awesome.

Day 2
Today I put growth on the shelf and devoted myself to implementing cargo rail, passenger rail and metros.
The cargo comes in and then goes out via the opposite terminal to 3 receiving terminals at 3 commercial districts across the city,

I also dealt with traffic thanks to my discoveries from my recent highwayless cities experiments ;)
Here's my Walk the Dog tourist district on an island that had 5 road bridges. I deleted all of them! It is now completely isolated from road traffic. The only way to reach the island is by rail, metro or ship and it works wonderfully.

With the traffic and transport dealt with, it was time to get more of these great new landmarks unlocked. One of them required 600+ city service buildings and at this point I only had 200 or so.
The easy solution? Build 400 services lol
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=452994076
This solution had me laughing for most of the day and I'll make a vid of what I saw. (Edit: I did)

With that unlock done, next is garbage overload and then after that is mass abandonement. The garbage will force mass abandonment and so I've turned off all my incinerators and I'm watching my whole city drown in trash and waving goodbye to my population. Until I get the unlock.

So, what landmarks did I manage to get today? Feast your eyes on this candy ;)

While I was doing all that, I also managed to try a few new assets out and this one deserves a mention. It is huge! It required quite a bit of tidying up; you need to delete the trees it sits on top of. I also thought it needed a little something to incorporate it into my city plan and so I used parts of the circular modular intersection to create a ring of commercial/office/residential around it. It has worked out quite nicely.

Another couple of landmarks unlocked today ;)
Cathedral
This is the one that required mass abandonement to unlock. By the time it was done I lost 66% of my population o.O
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=454207936
Theatre
This one required 10 full cemetaries and so it took quite some time to achieve.

Today, I continued to add more public transport, including adding a metro to the Apple Campus!
I had originally, discounted the idea of putting in a rail terminal and then after a brief discussion with the asset's author, I looked at it again. A metro was possible, the only snag would be how to ensure it got the fire, police, garbage services it would require, since I wouldn't want any of those buildings in the centre of the asset. Eureka, the solution... tunnel in and out lol That and the use of the invisible power lines asset made this possible.
It now looks even better and is very functional ;)

Really amazing work. And cool how many people seem to use the metro... paths are full of people :D

Wow, impressive!

The city is growing ever longer, wider and now thanks to Gula's new Kingdom Tower asset, ever higher too!
Also, today I helped someone and explained about lighting and textures. I used Heathcliffe as an example of how you can use the wonderful mod, Terrain Texture Replacer to customise your city's appearance. This led to bringing winter to Heathcliffe!
Enjoy ;)

Today I was determined to unlock the last remaining European Landmarks.
The 30,000 zones of commercial built to unlock the Hypermarket was no mean feat!
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=456871310
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=456871465
I'll natuarlly use this to create a big shopping mall area with plenty of parking lot assets ;)

The Sports arena required 30,000 per week expenditure on education and was by comparison a much easier task.

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=456870774
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=456870914
That just leaves one Landmark left to unlock, the formidable Arc de Triomphe. It requires 15k kids in elementary school.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=456824251
As you can see, I'm only halfway there with 130k pop, so now I'll just have to grow to around 250k. It's time to demolish all of that low density commercial now and rezone for low density residential ;)
