Wasted effort in Man On The Moon
The level with the moon has a star (B-world), I figured out how to turn the moon, and how to get to the telescope/binoculars. The binoculars requires keys, so I figured that I could use the ones found in High Ground.

Here's how I tried to get them:

1. I activate the fans, grab the box and fly up on the ledge.

2. I jump on the pillars, from the pillars to the beams, and down on the ledge.

3. I walk along the ledge, until I get to the fence, I then jump from the ledge to the pillar in the fence, then a fast jump to the next, and a carefull jump to the ledge in High Ground.

4. I place the box on the structure in the middle, on the ledge close the beginning of the level.

5. I jump from the box and onto the ledge, walk out of the level and go back in.

6. Opens up the way to the keys, jumps from the placed box to the ledge.

7. Walks along the ledge, and drops down on the outside of the level, climbs back into the level area using the ladder outside Man On The Moon.

8. Flies up to the ledge using the fan, and walks to the binoculars.

Now I'm thinking, FINALLY! But.. no. Keys doesn't work, I failed a lot of times on 3. It requires very precise jumps, the margin for error is so small that to pull it off, your jumps must be almost perfect.

All that work, for nothing, and I thought I almost had the star within reach.

I thought that the moon had to be turned around, and that the binoculars somehow was related to getting a star. Turned out to be a giant easter egg! There wasn't much point in finding the key after all, as I already knew where the connector was, and from the Aperture logo could guess that Wheatley was up there. Though my effort was wasted, it did take high level of skill, one mistake and I had to start over again.

Now I'm almost done collecting all the stars in B, just missing the ones in level 7!

i've been to that viewer several times with the key and can never see Wheatley. I wonder if he was removed from the game.

No he is not, you have to turn the moon first.

I did, and was up there looking through the viewer at the moon with it turned around. No Wheatley.

Well he is quite small, you need to look for him closely. Anyway I can say for sure he is still there.

It's kind of hard too the way the Aperture logo keeps going bright. There's no time limit right? And far as I know there's no zoom button for the viewer.

Yes after new engine update some lighting can be too bright. I'll take a look at this if this is the case. But you may try lower performance settings.

Conclusion ,yes the update breaks it but in other way, he is still there but his model is fading out according to the distance, and you can't see him from the surface.

Aw man, I did roughly the same as the original poster, and I made a video before googling what the binoculars are really about.

Chiming in to say that I did the exact same thing as OP. Spent maybe an hour working on getting the key from High Ground to the binoculars as laid out here. You're not kidding about step 3, took so long to get down perfectly, and it was very frustrating because restarting put you all the way back to the start of the world.

Felt so bummed finding out that the "key" is literally just right below the binoculars. Even though it was annoying getting the box across, I was really into what I thought was a cheeky puzzle. Wasted chance imo.

They shouldn't have made it a key for the binos, considering a "key" mechanic is already in the game. I don't think they were going for a troll red herring puzzle but who knows. Don't binoculars take coins irl? Tell us we need to find a coin, at least then we won't waste an hour doing the wrong but logical thing.

Just downloaded on XSX

Have done everything on B2 and don’t even see the connector on the moon.
Got the key, jumped over and walked across the ledge, get to the viewfinder and look up at the moon, but there’s no connector 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you are looking for the star as OP was, I don't think you need to do any of what they did.
Unless it's a star that is not marked on the road signs...
