Any ideas what the alien map is about?

An alien map appears in several locations. Any guesses what it depicts?
My first guess is it might show the gate network or the alien structure locations, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Might it be an easter egg reference of some sort?

Its actually a crime scene outline - Two Precursors struck by a loosened ceiling block.

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't tie into anything in the current game. Not the location of portals, caches, alien vents, eggs, cuddlefish, etc. Might have been a holdover from a previous map in EA, but doesn't seem like anything now. Or at least nothing that anyone has uncovered.
