XCOM 2
Enemy spawning logic
Experienced LW2 player that decided to come back and try this game again.

My second mission in on Commander is a hack the data cache mission. Force level 1, obviously. Out of the 9 potential enemies, I had: 1 trooper, 1 grenadier, 1 sectoid, and 5 surveillance drones... What the actual f*ck is this?

4 hp enemies with 2 armor is absolutely devasting early game. Especially when they just run up and stun your guys for 4 turns.

I've never had this happen previously playing this. Did something get changed or am I horribly unlucky? How on earth are you supposed to get anywhere near the hack location when you are surrounded by tanks that stun you for half the mission timer?

it's pretty common for early game to have 1-3 solo drone pods. They can also spawn as followers of regular 2 and 3 man pods (although that's usually less common, your example seems like on the extreme end of the variance spectrum).

Since this is on commander, if it was lib1 detection, I believe all libs have special schedules to add more drones to make them harder to cheese but I'm not sure about lib1 since it doesn't have a STR bonus.

They're annoying but they don't really deal damage so they're more harmful when they stun you while other ennemies are active, less so when all you're battling with are drones. By LCPL you get slug shot on assaults that really helps. You can also use shotguns on high mobility units instead of rifles or smgs for point-blank reliable dmg on drones in the super early game.

And with specialists getting combat protocol at squaddie instead of lcpl since 1.2, you have a bit more tool to help deal with them early.
