What you are suggesting is similar to character creators in games, and for those you need a lot of resources, which as a small company, we do not have.
We've created FaceRig so that anyone who knows 3D modeling to be able to make their own model and import it. We've even released the files for a few of our avatars so that the content creators who want to edit them, would be able to do so.
Until we are big enough to start larger projects, we are counting on our community to bring some more content on the workshop which everyone will benefit from (:
I think your product is great. But I wish I knew how to do 3D modelling to create my own avatar; however I simpy don't have the expertise nor the time to develop it.
I understand what you mean in you reply, but this is not exactly what I was trying to say. I understand that a full character designer is not something you could do given your resources; it would be too much to ask for. I'm rather suggesting making available very plain avatars onto which anyone who doesn't know 3D modelling or doesn't have time to learn it could just add props and use custom skins (for props I'm thinking maybe
add a few wigs and more facial hair - that would be perfect for this customization idea). I'm guessing that making available a stripped down version of a few of the existing avatar models would not be too much work since they already exist in more complex forms; the files would consist of the core head shapes without anything added.
I did a few experiments with the basic human female avatars by removing pretty much everything (except the dress which is part of the model) by making some of the .tga files transparent. However I can't do this with the basic human male model because the hair is part of its head. I've ran into a similar issue with the human avatar models that are available as download.
I think your product would be able to reach a greater audience if customization would be made easier trough basic avatar + more facial props. I believe my suggestion goes toward this idea without a large investment on your part.
Anyway, this is just my two-cents.
