Since these are 3d is it possible to have side views of these characters?

Yep, for some it is ( depends what is the maximum rotation that the artist decided for each one)
Just amplify their rotation ( head yaw) in the advanced tracking settings ( in the advanced UI) .

You can also rotate them with the mouse and keyboard to a certain extent.
