Where do I put custom prop textures?
I have searched all over but can't figure out just where I'm supposed to put those modified TGA files from the new prop/avatar texture packs.

According to pages I've referenced, I need to put these files in: steamapps\common\FaceRig\Mod\VP\PC_CustomData\Objects but I'm wondering if there's some step I'm missing.

I've been trying to modify the headphones. I tried copying the new TGA to:
  1. The root Objects folder
  2. A subfolder named headphones01
Neither has worked. Is there some switch I need to flip in the program? I couldn't find anything there. I have read both the associated PDF's that come with the textures (or that were found linked to on the news post about these resources; I can't remember exactly).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello, what you need to do is create a new folder called Avatar01_accesories inside the Objects folder, then, inside that Avatar01 folder create another folder titled after the modified prop you want to use in FaceRig.

For example, if you want to modify the headphones prop (headphones_d-diffuse_ng_1024), the folder created under the Avatar01_accesories should be titled headphones.

So, the entire path should look like this:

<steaminstalldir>\steamapps\common\FaceRig\Mod\VP\PC_CustomData\Objects\Avatar01_accesories\headphones

Thanks for the follow-up. I had to wait until I got home to test this out. Here are a few of my thoughts after attempting to make this work again.

I have created the subfolders as instructed. If I understand what you're writing, I need to use the precise naming convention provided in the texture ZIP-files that you made available for us to download. Is this correct?

Because with that thinking in mind, this is the filename and path that I'm creating: PC_CustomData\Objects\Avatar01_accesories\headphones01\ headphones_d+diffuse_ng_1024.tga

I also tried 'headphones' without the '01' bit in case that was incorrect thinking. Neither works though. What am I missing?

Thanks.

Okay, here are a few things that I've discovered in the meantime, when I tried it for myself:

The headphones_d+diffuse_ng_1024.tga file should be saved as a .DDS file (I used XnView to modify its texture and to save it as .DDS), then, after the file extension has been changed, rename the file to headphones_d (just delete what comes after the d letter) and place it inside the headphones01 folder, just like you did.

That's good to know. I work principally in Photoshop, so I'm planning to download this extension that should allow me to save to DDS: http://gametechdev.github.io/Intel-Texture-Works-Plugin/

If that doesn't work for some reason, I'll download XnView. I'm going to parse this out in the following so that I'm 100% clear on what the proper sequence is:

  • Edit headphones_d+diffuse_ng_1024.tga
  • Export as DDS. New filename: headphones_d+diffuse_ng_1024.dds
  • Change extension back to TGA. New filename: headphones_d+diffuse_ng_1024.tga
  • Revise filename to exclude suffix. New filename: headphones_d.tga
  • Place this in the folder that corresponds wtih the master texture pack's file structure (but is in the Object folder within my library)

Will I need to exit and restart Facerig for texture changes to take effect? That's all I can think of. I'll try this when I get home. Thanks again!

I used the notes from last post to guide me, but still no success.

I successfully created the DDS file via both XnView and Photoshop (using the aforementioned plugin). In case it matters: The file exported by XnView is much larger than that exported from Photoshop. (And the Photoshop plugin prompts me for options. This dialog box[image.ibb.co], in fact.) The options selected in that image are those that were used when I produced the TGA from Photoshop.

I renamed the resulting files and placed in the appropriate folder. In fact, I tried both headphones_d+diffuse_ng_1024.tga and headphones_d.tga just in case that mattered. However, there was only ever one TGA file in the headphones01 folder at any one time. Also, I exited and reentered Facerig each time I edited the TGA filename. I took these actions with both conversion-methods (NxView & PS).

I look forward to more ideas. Thanks!

The file that you need to place in the headphones01 folder should have the .DDS extension so do not change it back to .tga after you edit it. Delete any .tga file you've put in the folder and leave only the .DDS one.

Works! Thanks so much david. Much appreciated.

Follow-up question: I have replaced the headphone texture. Is there any way to similarly edit the bumpmap? Or is that a bridge too far. :) If I can't do it, it's not terribly important, but I figured I'd at least ask.

I tried this with both headphone01 and the santahat to much success.
.... However when I tried the same thing with the "Froghat" it did not work. Im guessing it has something to do with the file naming, would you be able to help me out?

D:\Steam\steamapps\common\FaceRig\Mod\VP\PC_CustomData\Objects\Avatar01_accesories\avatarfrog_hat_cstm_d.dds

the file name is pulled directly from prop texture pack. (even though it is listed as "Patchhat" in facerig

For sure it has to do with its naming. I'm currently looking into this. I'll let you know.

I´m having the same problem with the frog hat prop! Do you have and update on the issue?

Thanks:)

I followed these instructions for the green glasses prop and I'm not having any luck either. Is there a discord for troubleshooting or anything like that?

I'm trying to fix this same problem cause whenever I use the green glasses and green screen it'll just be invisible and I have been trying to fix it for hours.
