There will probably be a Linux version at some point, but that will only happen once the windows version is fully up and running, and then Mac will probably go first.
There probably won't be (direct) webcam support, but you can use puppeteering mode.
Also, if you use a skype call, you can use some sort of capture software, and let that output as a webcam for FaceRig to pick up. As said, not the best way but you can at least toy around with it a bit.
.
One thing I should point out though, is that on the indiegogo page itself, it was explained too that Linux wouldn't be supported on launch.
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/facerig#faq
We will not launch FaceRig for a new platform if we do not have enough funds and resources to finalize and properly support the previous one (out of respect for our user-base).
Of course we will hold community polls and if it turns out more people want Mac rather than Android for instance, we will switch the order.
One thing I just thought off: that might be a bit more easy for them to understand (you will still have to install the program with wine yourself)
Make a (small) video with your webcam / microphone and either save it as .avi or convert it to that (there are hundreds of off and online tools for that)
bring that file to the windows area.
import that file.
If will now show what you(r children) did as their favorite avatar, and they can even just switch avatars and reply it with them to see which one they like most.
See it as a parroting-mode, it will just work with the webcam, but with a delay.
"Games" (in the top left) > "Activate a product on Steam..." :3
I do agree with "Buyer beware", but it's not really necessary ^^
