Newbie asking for pointers...
Hi there, I purchased FaceRig a few days ago and love it to bits, and when I learned you could make custom avatars I got hooked on the idea.
However, I'm very, very new to 3D modeling, it's something I've had an interest in a while but never got to grips with. (I tried playing around with Blender about a decade ago, but couldn't get on with it.)
I am fairly good at teaching myself things though, so have been plowing through some tutorials and vids to get me started, but what I really feel I need is pointers in the right direction so I'm not wasting my time on making something incompatible.

I'm not asking for a walkthrough, I just want to make sure I have the right tools to get going and I'm having troubles finding certain specific info online.

I'm currently working in Sculptris, and this is what I have so far: http://i.imgur.com/ovRfD0d.png
(It's supposed to be a fox...)

My questions are:
1. Are Sculptris models compatible?
2. Do I need to sculpt the jaw/tongue separately and then line them up or do I open up the mouth and sculpt the insides? (i.e. what is the 'neutral pose' for the face)
3. How do I add fur to the model? - Does using a 'fur brush' in Sculptris translate or will I need another program? (if so, which one?)
4. What program do I need to add bones and do the rigging?
5. Eyeballs/irises and eyelids - How do they work?

I don't mind buying extra software as long as it's not too expensive (free is awesome ofc. but I don't mind shelling out a few bucks here and there for a hobby.)

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

The model needs to contain targa/collada format so basically if Sculptris has this formats then it should work.
As for creating your own model, have you checked our documentation https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/app/274920/discussions/6/485622866436709756/ ?
This is what you will need to follow in order to create your own avatar.

Hi again, making steady (albeit slow) progress with my model, learning as I'm going along. Sculpting is turning out to be quite fun so I'm really hoping I can figure out the rest easily enough. - Been trying to read up and look at tutorials but I learn best by actually doing the stuff at the same time, otherwise half of what's being said just goes over my head.

As far as I can tell I can make the Sculptris model compatible by exporting everything and loading it up in Blender, where I can do the rigging/bones etc. so we'll see how I jump that hurdle. (Blender should save in the right format, I've just not gotten there yet...)

I'm almost at the painting stage for my model, just a couple of things left to sculpt still, but here is what I've got so far in case anyone is curious:

These looks impressive! Considering you are new to 3D modelling. I'd love to do some 3D models too but conventional modelling tools never sticks with me (either Blender or 3DS Max). Looks like Sculptris or ZBrush is way easier to create a model with.

Thanks, and yes, Sculptris is very user friendly and quite fun to use. (It's basically a stripped down version of Zbrush and it's free.)
It's like modelling out of clay, but with a pen/mouse instead of your hands, so you're drawing the sculpt.
If you have a tablet it feels very natural to use, and once you learn the shortcuts it's quite fast too. It has it's shortcomings and sometimes I end up making a mess of things that cannot be undone (but I save frequently and make sure to make fresh save files at certain milestones) but you'll get used to avoiding the things that cause troubles. (Don't try to make a doughnut out of a sphere for example - Not sure if it's possible but my attempt went really wonky...)

And I was the same with Blender/3DS Max, tried them out ages ago and got very frustrated and confused, causing me to give up on 3D modeling, but I'm quite enjoying Sculptris.

Hi, are you considering making a timelapse video of how to create a FaceRig avatar using Sculptris?
I was just thinking that it may help other community members to see it.

Quite possibly, I'm still picking at things bit by bit, but was thinking if I managed to do this I'd put some sort of guide together and post it up.

That sounds great! Just keep us posted when it's live so we can share it :)
