The only thing is to use Proton Experimental. For me, the default Proton version suffers from missed playing of audio effects, and if you know the game, audio cues are extremely important in order to play the game. With Proton Experimental, it still happens occasionally, but it is rare and not enough to ruin the game experience.
Out of curiosity, at what point do you start noticing missing sound effects? Just played up to about Level 9 myself with the default Proton version and it seems to be just fine to me. I'm assuming it's an issue in the later levels?
I did not notice it in the earlier levels either, but I noticed it around the time the spherical enemies, that play the Danger! sound cue when the reach the rim of the web, are introduced - maybe level 22 or so.
I played through the game to level 100 on Proton Experimental, and it was mostly great, save the occasional missing sound cue.
Just in case you are wondering what makes this game special, opinionated gamedev Jonathan Blow (Braid, The Witness) wrote a blog post about it back in the day. It has since fallen off the web, but is archived here[archive.md].
Acid Mix is the way it is meant to be played - the visual insanity is key to the experience.
but good to know that proton experimental is the way to go. have you tried it with proton-GE yet? id do it myself but it sounds like youre distinctly better at the game than i am lmao
I will have to try the experimental. Just need achievements now ;)
After I wrote my post, I noticed from your profile that you are a Llamasoft connoisseur and literally wrote the guide on Space Giraffe. Very Cool.
I have not tried Proton-GE - Proton Experimental worked well enough for me, that I did not worry about it.
I do not remember having problems with the controller being recognized. From within the Space Giraffe control setup menu in-game, it shows up as an Xbox 360 controller for Windows. I think it worked out of the box.
I did however, assign one of the back buttons to F1 to get rid of the unnecessary bull meter it insists on showing on the first 15 levels.
Just need a VIC-20 collection now with all the classics, although they do play nicely via VICE on my RG350M.
I bet you're happy now!
