Always Press E when you receive a key item that you're not picking up yourself. I got a key from a certain NPC, and pressed ESC instead of E to get out of the dialogue and I dropped the key instead of receiving it and it soft locked the game for me. The key fully disappears. Luckily I saved right before this happened.
