How is research and development in this game?
The reason why I ask about this is that I have yet to find a game thet lets you develop your own units or change the specifications of existing ones (for example try to mount a long 88 on PZ4 hull in exchange for less speed and armo or add more armor but mount the long 50mm from pz3 on it or add extra cannons to a BF109 or remove bunch of cannons from a cruiser and add 6 massive ones) Only game that had somewhat of this function was P.T.O 4 but that was only naval battles with some air elements to it. I don't mind straight forward research but it's been done so many times so far that it's becomming boring. Research next tree to unlock PzII research next one for PZ IIc research next for PZ 4 and so on kinda like in Hearts of Iron.

I understand these games are trying to be true to historical events but if they give you a chance to change history they should also give us a chance to create new weapons/vehicles.

Due to the scale the research is pretty easy and straight forward, you are paying for research and after specific amount of time (depends on your investments and luck), a new level of units is unlocked.

How is the research done for the AI?

The AI is researching spells based on their character, so generally the AI tries to research teh spells that fits it's gameplay style with some amount or randomness to increase replayability

Ok and thanks for the reply. I probably didnt word that question well. What I really meant was do the AI pay for their research? I played as Hungary and on normal could only get lvl 2 infantry and nothing else while I see in other games the AI getting to lvl 3 with everything (except nukes). And all the minor factions AI teched up together (Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, even Ireland) when there seems to be no way they can get enough pp. Is there some game secret or aspect I've missed somewhere?
