Designing crash
I'm getting problems with the vehicle designer since I restarted this game on my new PC. I didn't have these problems on the old PC and I'm 99% certain that it's a problem caused by other software (pre-installed McAfee is my prime suspect). But, it's a problem that only occurs in the vehicle designer (actually designing the mirrors and such), specifically while selecting parts to add to the vehicle. Molding and gaps seems to be the most problematic areas, and the drop-down menu bugs up and nothing is selectable and tabbing out causes all menus to disappear.

I don't expect it to be much to be done with ^ this technically speaking crappy info, but if others have similar issues it might be good to know...

Try white listing the game files in McAfee: http://wiki.gearcity.info/doku.php?id=troubleshooting:antivirus

If it still crashes after that, shoot me over the log file, you may have out of date/OEM drivers installed for the GPU: http://wiki.gearcity.info/doku.php?id=troubleshooting:steam_logfile

OK the log file seemed mildly interesting to my untrained eye so I sent it over. Hope it can help you somehow. To be exact, the program became unresponsive (didn't actually crash) when I tried to add gaps and jams, and I've had serious stutters previously when I tried to add molding although that might be unrelated. This was the first car that I tried to add doorgaps on.

I shouldn't have too outdated drivers since the PC is only 6 months old.

I'll post my email reply here. If you just alt-tabbed back into the game before applying decals, the issue is the same, directx9 loses gpu state upon losing window focus. It has to rebuild the data, and that can cause issues on some computers.

Now for the email:

Thanks for the log file. From the looks of it, you are alt-tabbing out of the game and/or doing other stuff on the computer while playing. GearCity uses DirectX9, which is about 15 years old. DirectX9 does not play well with users alt-tabbing, especially fullscreen.

Please switch to OpenGL or do not do anything while playing and see if that resolves the issue.

If you do plan on using DirectX9 and continue to multi-task, please use windowed mode or borderless mode.

Disabling McAfee seems to solve it, tested twice without any problems with McAfee turned off, and since I like fullscreen mode and was meaning to disable McAfee anyways that's what I'll stick to. I wasn't doing anything in the background, but McAfee probably was. Thanks for the help.

Quite welcome, I figured this was the case originally, as we have had similar issues in the past.

Log file threw me in a loop though. :)

Woops, spoke too soon. Just crashed to desktop while fiddling with the jams and gaps. I checked task manager and there's nothing unusual going on, basicly only steam running. I'll try running in borderless window.

Tried running OpenGL instead, and the gaps and jams are bugged there.

Try playing the game in DirectX without doing ANYTHING on the computer other than playing the game. No alt-tabbing, nothing. If it does not crash, the issue is with the emulated DirectX9 functions on your Windows 10 install, DX9 GPU Loss State, and your video card.

There will be limitations with OpenGL2 renderer based on your GPU's driver support. Considering you have a fairly new GPU, and OpenGL2 is around 17 years old now, driver support is probably limited.

The main thing is, does it crash with OpenGL? If not, then the original problem is solved. There isn't anything I can do about broken GL features in Windows.

It does eventually crash with DX9 with only the game (and steam) running from a fresh restart of computer. It doesn't crash with OpenGL. Only problem, both platforms, is with jams and gaps (eventually causing crash with DX9 and not working at all with OGL). It doesn't always crash instantly when you add a gap though, in a couple of tries I added gaps, added more items and then it crashed when I clicked back to the gaps I had added.

I think all else like stuttering was McAfee, spent the last couple of hours testing.

So yeah, problem solved. I'll just not touch the gaps and I'm fine :)

I've had more issues with this, both in OpenGL and DX9. Crash to desktop on both platforms, but usually after I've used the vehicle designer for a while. Can't pinpoint the exact item that causes the crashes. Using predesigned vehicles works.

Thanks for the update, I'll run it through valgrind, but if it can't find anything on my system, there really isn't anything I can do without your physical computer being here.
