1930s Chassis Design issue
I'm in the habit of periodically redesigning components so they stay fresh, because I've found that an "Overall 50" component drops over time until it hits 1 after 30 years...

Anyway, in this game it's Feb. 1933.
I designed my first Unibody chassis in Jan. 1930. That chassis, now in Feb 1933 has the following attributes:
Str 60 Com 65 Per 64 Dep 77 Man 48 Overall 76 Cost $67 weight 213kg

That's not bad for 1933 but I think I should be able to do better given that I've been maxing out R&D development since before WW1 and I'm still getting >2 points/year in each category.

Anyway, designing a chassis with the same component parts (Unibody, FF, Double Wishbone, Double Wishbone) and cloning the settings from the 1930 version (Summary/Clone/Select 1930 chassis/apply) gets me:
Str 52 Com 56 Per 56 Dep 68 Man 49 Overall 70 Cost $123 weight 215kg

Why is the 1933 clone of a 1930 design worse in every measurable? What's the variable that's causing this?

Did you buy out or merge with other companies? When you do so your R&D skills drop or rise depending on if the other companies skills were lower or higher than yours.

Good suggestion, but no. I haven't done a takeover or merger. (but I'll remember that for the future - thanks for the tip :))

All that's happened in the 3 years from 1930 - 1933 is I've plugged away surviving the great depression while keeping my R&D Investment maxed out. So, by rights, the redesign should be a shade better. Maybe more expensive by a few dollars.

Sorry for the late reply.

Feel free to send me the save game, and let me know which two chassis to look at, and I will tell you why the ratings are different. http://wiki.gearcity.info/doku.php?id=troubleshooting:steam_savegamefile

As for price and weight, those automatically go up every year.

There are feature bounties which will remove the 0-100 rating limits, which should resolve all these why is my x not as good as my older y questions.

No apology required. I know you're busy

I'll take you up on that - I just need to hop in to the savegame, clone it and press "Build" on the clone

Price makes sense (inflation - although maybe not in the early '30s ;) )
Weight is a bit weird - as a moderate car nut (not an obsessive) I would have thought materials innovation & design improvements would lead to everything getting lighter over time...

How do I see those? There's a few things that I might want to invest in.

Ok, I've just pushed "Build" and the actual 1933 Chassis (as opposed to what you see on the design screen before you commit to building it) is slightly better than the 1930 version - albeit virtually twice as expensive to build

Weights of vehicles have been increasing over the years as manufacturers use stronger, more durable materials and safety standards increased. Remember, Safety regulations are abstracted in the current versions of GearCity.

But to give you an idea, 1927 Ford Model A weighed around 2000 lbs. The 1949 Ford weighed 3000lbs. The 1955 Ford weighed 3200 lbs. Ford doesn't make sedans in the US anymore, but their last mid size sedan was 4000+ lbs (Ford Taurus), and it is only an inch or two bigger than the 1949 Ford.

The Feature Bounty system will be launched post release. You can do a search around the forums, or read the news announcements for details. No point on adding more stuff to the game now, when my goal for the last year has been to finish the game.

Remember, prices of things will go down in the game as you make more of them. You would need to enable the component inflation option at the start of the game to have inflation affect the price of older components.
