Supercharger and Valves in Second Gear DLC (v2.5.0.1): Bug or Intended Balancing?
In the Second Gear DLC (v2.5.0.1) of GearCity, the supercharger around 1905 seems extremely inefficient compared to a naturally aspirated engine.

The increase in power or torque is negligible (only 2-3 Nm and almost no increase in overall HP), while fuel consumption skyrockets. For example, the same engine gets about 11 km/l when naturally aspirated but drops to just 7 km/l with a supercharger.

A similar issue occurs with valves. Before the introduction of SOHC, the Two Strokes valve appears to be the best option overall, with 5 out of 5 stars in everything except fuel consumption. In the base version of GearCity, however, the best compromise before SOHC was usually the F or T valve.

Since these components now perform drastically differently compared to the base game, I’m not sure whether this is a bug or an intentional change in balancing. Does anyone have any insights on this?

2nd Gear isn't released on Steam yet. 2nd Gear questions and bug reports should be posted on the official forums or sent to me by email (admin@ventdev.com). I am not touching GearCity again until June, so anything posted here on Steam will be lost.

Also, be sure to upload your save game: https://ventdev.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=42

Hi Eric, thank you for the quick response here and on reddit

I’m aware that there is a subcomponent system and that their ratings are dynamic.

That said, I personally find it strange that the Two Strokes valve is superior to F and T valves at the beginning of the game, given that all of them are already researched. E.g. Once SOHC and OHC valves become available, they already offer equal or greater power than the Two Strokes (with other trade-offs).

I understand that a supercharger is a more technologically advanced (and therefore newer) solution compared to a naturally aspirated engine. However, since both technologies were theoretically known in 1900, this does not justify the fact that using a supercharger is not only useless (as it provides no noticeable power increase) but actually detrimental (costing €100-200 more and increasing fuel consumption by ~5 km/l). This objectively makes no sense. If this technology is available in the automotive industry, no matter how crude, it should provide at least some advantage, however minimal.

I’m not sure how save files would help in this case, as this issue occurs in every new game in version 2.5.0.1.

I'm fairly certain this is a bug for another reason as well.

I ran some tests by starting a game with unlimited funds, allocating research funds to components, and creating multiple engine and transmission designs between 1900 and 1910 (CFO difficulty level).

The research points for the supercharger increase, yet it remains useless.
The research points for the vast majority of transmission subcomponents (both gearboxes and gears) are always zero. In practice, only the 1-speed gear improves.
(I had already noticed in my previous game that the 3-speed gearbox was not progressing.)

Please post this on the official forums. Steam is not the place for 2nd Gear feedback.
