After release, I will try to raise money from the community to add more features to the game via a bounty system. Improvements to the model names isn't on the list, but I will consider adding it to the list.
Names are pulled at random from nouns.txt list or generated from random number/letters. And in the case of components, specs.
There is no more indepth logic to the name selection system than that.
The system is completely moddable. http://wiki.gearcity.info/doku.php?id=modtools:namelisteditor
Just be aware you need about 5000 names, else you risk duplication which can cause crashing.
I believer there is already a mod or two in the workshop that has changed the nouns list already.
It would require logic being added to the naming system and separate files. Neither of which I considered important enough to spend a week doing when there were so many other features and issues with the game that needed addressed.
The bigger issue is that names can not be duplicated. The game world can only have 1 "Model A". Otherwise the internal bits breaks and all hell breaks loose.
So limiting names to eras would be a bit impossible without a complete change to the internal selection systems.
You'd be surprised how many weird animal names there are. And there isn't enough named planets. The game generates several thousand cars per game, and tens of thousands of components. The model names need to be unique outside of new generations of vehicles.
If I am not mistaken, the current name list comes from animals, places, verbs, mythology, and foreign language translations of those.
