It removes historical data such as your monthly sales figures and production numbers per city. I believe it keeps vehicle data, as there isn't much. Thus why superlatives remain.
The easiest way to tell is to save the game before purging. Purge. Then Save As a different file name. Go to the save game folder and check the file sizes. (Directions, don't worry about sending the files though: http://wiki.gearcity.info/doku.php?id=troubleshooting:steam_installfolder#sending_a_save_game)
Depending on how you run your company, you should see between 10-75% file size reduction.
I didi just as you suggested, clicking it twice and then saving a backup to see if anything changed. Superlatives still remained the same, and the save size between the two was identical.
The only thing I am doing that is not stock is I have the real name AI mod installed and running.
Superlatives will remain the same as I said. It does not remove old car data, just your historical sales data.
How many years into the game are you? How many vehicles have you made? How many branches are you operating? And how large is the save game size?
The purge system works fine for me, It reduces a 1.2GB save game to around 300mb in SP5. In the up coming SP6, the game automatically purges some data and gets the same save game down to 200mb.
