Ya, that's bug gotten more common lately.

The two solutions I know of are:
1. Make a save before you accept such missions so you can re-load if they dont' work.

2. Use console commands to cancel the mission and pick it up again, but this will disable achievements or something.

Well, there was editing the save file but I don't think that works anymore.
