Completly wrong.
Planets and rocks are completly 3D.
Yes it's possible to create, but Egosoft probably won't do it.
I like what they did with Radiant Haven, Just have a Super Highway go to low orbit and have a space elevator station.
3D or not, they're still background-objects gameplay-wise, although not as simple as in X3 for example (where they were just animated parts of the space-backgrounds).
Mechanically, everything you don't directly interact with is still a background-object.
They are very far away though.
I was able to give myself a Valhalla that flew around 3k m/s, and was able to survive atmosphere burn and get to surface of planet (in X3TC). Bounced off and died.
You didn't die in atmosphere, that was the extreme sector border (far off the sector-map already). The atmosphere is in-mention only and not actually in the game. Technically you didn't even actually move closer towards the planets in X (ever) as they were animated background objects, 3D perhaps, but out of players reach actually.
No, I really moved very, very close to the planet, then I started losing shield and died.
I did it many times. They are 3D objects, that's a certain thing.
There's no map border BTW, you can fly 30000 kilometres outside from the centre of sector, you won't get killed. Not even in X:BTF.

It's the planet in Radiant Heaven, in Omicron Lyrae.
Interesting that the planets actually have surface, they are not just big balls (in previous games, they were only big balls with texture, without any actual surface - except for the shattered planets).
MAN IT LOOKS SO COOLL....
