BHG RTS run time ERROR
Every time I start Rise of Nations it says "BHG RTS run time Error" and it "Could not retrieve amount of display modes!". I have tried redownloading it with no sucess. Anyone know how to fix the game?

- close steam
- verify integrity of files of rise of nations (in steam games library, click games, right click name rise of nations, properties, etc.)
- run game as admin directly from the steam folder
- update your graphics card drivers
- run DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ from rise of nations steam folder when necessary.

Should be fixed around there.

Did you mange to fix this? I just bought it and I'm dealing w it too. The answer from Fedomar did nothing, reinstall, tried older versions, diffrent compatability pack but nothing works! And I was annoyed about how complicated all the command & conquer games was, this one took the price. Hopefully I'll get my money back

I have the exact same problem, and haven't found any solution

I'm also having this exact issue. There are three buttons on the error popup that come up - Abort, Retry and Ignore. Retry fails in the same way, Ignore causes the program to crash.

I've tried verifying the files and reinstalling without success. Running as admin from the steam folder also doesn't work.

I've also tried running the riseofnations.exe file in compatability mode for Win XP, 7 and 8. All produce the same error. Maybe it's a DirectX issue.

Same issue here. So far no amount of compatibility modes or anything has helped.

I have it running on my desktop fine - Win 10 64 bit, DirectX 12 with an old Nvidia GeForce GTX 285. Installed fine and ran the first time without any issues. But it's still not working on my laptop. Both systems are runing Win 10 64 bit with DirectX 12.

Running dxdiag on both computers shows that DirectDraw, Direct3D and AGP Texture Acceleration are all enabled on both so it doesn't seem to be a DirectX issue. Video card drivers maybe?

The laptop that it's not working on has an Intel HD Graphics 520 chip with the latest drivers (22.20.16.4749). I'm at a loss for what else to try.

Can anyone else please post their specs (OS, Video Card) so maybe we can narrow it down?

I cant find the " DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ " files in the Rise of Nations folder. Everything else didnt work but I still need to try this ^.

I think it has to be an issue related to DirectX or the graphics because everything else Fedomar suggested didn't work and all the other steam forums are talking about how steam requires a new version of DirectX that moderatly old computers dont have.

have you tried rolling back to v1.10?

For me, the solution was to open the properties of the game in the STEAM library, click on the BETA tab, then roll-back to Version 1.10 - hope this helps

I don't think it's a DirectX error, I think the program doesn't handle exceptions gracefully

Same problem here. Older versions work fine, but I cannot play multiplayer if I'm running an older version. None of these workarounds have fixed the problem for me.

beta v1_20 (2017) also causes the same issue. V1_10 (2014) plays, but as soon as I select display options (either from the main menu or from in the game) it fails with the same message. My assumption is the game is trying to query the PC for available video resolutions and is not happy with the response from newer cards/drivers. I think the only reason the old version works at all is because it defaults to a different resolution.
