I'm unable to run this like normal, I deleted my APPDATA local folder, reinstalled blah blah blah nothing worked. Finally I rightclicked on it in Steam, Properties > Opened local content folder and ran the non_steam version. It pops up a dialog box saying the database isn't compatible and offers to fix it, let it do it's thing and it should work.

Thought I'd post this for anyone else having similar issues.
