Step 1: Restart the computer
First, completely shut down your Mac. Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen, then choose "Shut Down". Wait until the Mac is fully off. Then press the power button to turn it back on. This can often fix simple problems.
Step 2: Check if the game needs an update
Open Steam. Click on "Library", find Pharaoh: A New Era or Pharaoh: Dynasties in the list. If it shows an "Update" button, click it. Let the update finish before trying to play the game.
Step 3: Make sure Steam has full access
Click the Apple logo again, go to "System Settings", then click "Privacy & Security". Scroll down and click "Full Disk Access". Look for Steam in the list. If it is not turned on, turn it on by clicking the switch next to it. This allows Steam and the game to work properly.
Step 4: Check compatibility settings
Although the new MacBooks with M4 are very powerful, some games do not fully support them yet. We will try to help the game understand how to work better.
Open Steam again.
In your Library, right-click on Pharaoh: Dynasties (or use two fingers to click if you are using the trackpad).
Click "Properties".
In the left menu, click "Compatibility".
If there is an option that says something like "Force use of Rosetta" or "Use legacy compatibility mode", try turning it on.
Close the window and try starting the game again.
Step 5: Lower the graphics settings
If the game starts but is not responding properly (for example, you cannot move characters), it might be running with settings that are too high or unsupported.
Start the game.
If there is a Settings or Options menu before you load your city, click on it.
Go to the Graphics or Display settings.
Change the graphics quality to "Low" or "Medium".
Make sure Fullscreen is turned off, and set the game to "Windowed" mode.
Save the settings and return to the game.
Step 6: Try a different way to control the characters
Some Mac trackpads may not behave the same way as a mouse. Try using an external mouse if you have one. If not, try holding the Control (Ctrl) key while clicking on the map or characters. That sometimes helps.
Step 7: Reinstall the game (if nothing else worked)
This is safe to do and will not harm your Mac.
Open Steam and go to your Library.
Find the game, right-click on it, and choose "Uninstall".
After it is uninstalled, click "Install" again and let it download fresh files.
Once installed, try launching it again.
Final Step: Contact the developers if nothing helps
If it still does not work after all of this, go to the Steam page of the game and scroll down to the support or community section. You can post your issue there, or click on "Support" and describe your problem. Be sure to mention you are on a MacBook Pro with an M4 chip and using macOS Sequoia.
That is all. I hope this helps you get back into the game. Thank you for being part of the strategy game community, and do not give up. Sometimes games take a little bit of adjusting on newer computers.
Best wishes and good luck rebuilding Egypt!
