Tool: hg2img
hg2img is a simple heightmap to image converter.
This tool allows you to create a heightmap using an image editor instead of the built in tools.

I personally recommend to use the "smooth precision" mode, because it is the easiest to use and produces the best output. I do not recommend to run a grayscale image throught this tool, because it will probably not produce the expected output.

A proper instructions about how to use the program and the image formarts (time, colors, etc) would be nice.

I'm having a tough time getting this to work. I followed your instructions, but when I load up the map, it's just as flat as it was when I created it with maketrn. What am I doing wrong?

Your heightmap image size needs to be twice the length/width of your map's size divided by ten. So, if you're making a 2560x2560 map,

2560 / 10 = 256
256 * 2 = 512

Your image needs to be 512x512 pixels.

Thank you very much, my image was 256x256 pixels, which is what was causing the issue.

Umm, there's no .exe in this? The ReadMe only states the obvious?

There is an .exe file in there.

This program works a bit differently than the older ones, have a look at the source code.
It does not work in greyscale neither, you should in most cases just use one color channel.

Ah, Potato_047, the first download I got was called Heightmap-to-Image-converter-master.zip, and there was no .exe in it. I tried the dropbox link today & got a better file methinks. But if I have to read source code to make it work I'm doomed.
EDIT: Err, still could use a good ReadMe.txt... like Instructions?
EDIT #2: OK I see what this is doing, it's not anything like BMP2HGT which is what I was expecting. Can you please explain the use of changing an HG2 into an image? I'm a BZ mapmaking dinosaur, I made maps in 1.4, and BMP2HGT was the berries for me back then.
